Default Crappy tires or crappier tires? You decide!

Looking to toss some cheap summers on.

Here are the options:

1. Takeoff 245 40 18 Dunlop SP 600s (the much-hated STI OEM tires), 1.5k miles on them. $400 mounted and balanced on 18 x 9" wheels.

2. New Federal SS-595s, 245 40 18 (but wide at 9.8"), shipped to me for $400, figure another $80 for mounting. So $480.

Keep in mind, a 245 on a 9" wheel will be somewhat stretched, so the wider-by-nature 595s may look better.

With all the horrid complaints about the Dunlops, and the fairly consistent, "decent cheap tire" review of the Federals, I'm leaning toward the Feds.

Thoughts?

- Flamesuit, engaged.

C/N: New SS-595s for $480 or slightly used SP 600s for $400?

I've driven the 595's and a few sets of dunlops. I liked the 595's better than any of the dunlops I've been on.

there ARE about 3 different "595's"

ss-595
595 EVO
595RS-R

in that order of performance

beware not being SPECIFIC as all 3 tires are WAY different and NOT interchangeable

just sayin'

I wish the EVOs were being blown-out like the old SS's are. At $99 a tire, shipped, it's too cheap to pass up I think.

Buddy has the SS-595, no complaints. Good tire for the $$.

245/40 fed on 9" is not stretched (most 245's aren't stretched on a 9"), hell a 235/40 fed is not stretched on a 9". sits pretty square (if that helps or not).

I have the ss595's and they actually aren't bad. I've been pleasantly surprised with the dry/wet traction, and the sidewalls are nice and stiff. Like OP mentioned, section width runs about a size wide. The contact patch on my 245's is 9.9".

OP: dig around a bit more online for prices, I got my fed's for under $300 for a full set shipped to my door....

Thank for the input guys, can't find better than $370 shipped or so for now. Still dirt cheap.

I've seen some damn stretched looking 245s on 9" wheels. Not so much with 17's, but on 18's. I'm not worried about that with the Feds, though, as you said, thye run wide.

$300 shipped? Damn!

nah no stretch at all. like I said, my 245's are pretty damn square on my 9"s. Honestly, I was hoping they'd be a tad bigger, so I think next time I might step up one size (and might be a good option for you to go to a 255/35). The 255/35's are only about $5 more a tire.

If it wasn't pouring rain, I'd run out and snap a picture. Maybe I'll get a chance later.

I drove the SS-595's. Sorry for not being specific enough.
