Default '02 WRX Speedometer problem.

Hello Nasioc,

My friend is looking into a 02 Bugeye, he is concerned about the speedo problem. When ideling, the speedo is consantly at 20 MPH. But when the car gets turned off, it goes to zero. I'm not sure of what this is nor is he, or the owner... any help is appreciated!

Run, don't walk, but run away from that car. It has wiring problems that the last owner probably caused and couldn't figure out.

Or possibly it has a bad speedometer sensor on the transmission. When driven does the speed change at all? Are there any CEL codes?

Tranmission was previously replaced.... No CEL codes, and it's always consistantly 20 MPH faster than you're actually going.

The ECU reads voltage pulses from the VSS to determine actual speed. If you're getting pulses at idle--that is not a good thing. My guess is the problem resides inside the transmission.

Take the advice....walk away.

Should he get the tranny inspected before? It has a one year warranty. He is still determined.

That price tag will balloon another 2 grand when the tranny dies after the warranty expires.

I'm the guy set on purchasing the 2002 WRX with the speedometer issue. The speed reads at 20mph on idle and is consistantly 20 over. The transmission was rebuilt with a 1 year warranty, all reciepts are accountted for. No CELS. No electrical mods other than a turbo timer.

Could the speedometer error be a mis calibration?
Could it be a faulty wheel speed sensor?

One theory I have is that when the transmission was installed the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) was damaged or not securely connected.

Do you guys have any other theories?

wow, you guys are all a little crazy saying not to buy teh car. it likely has a simple issue. id check/replace teh vss first and if that didnt fix it id test swap teh cluster and see if that resolved it.

The VSS feeds the ECU and the the speedometer in parallel. You would have to log the vehicle speed to see if it differs from what the cluster is showing.

Yes it's my friend who is purchasing the car. He's confident that it's the cluster... I guess it had some other guages in it before or something like that, something went wrong...

So.... I found out the problem. The previous owner had indiglo gauges and the current owner removed them because the light had died in them. While removing the gauges he popped the speedo needle off and just put it back. He didnt put it back in the exact spot obviously.
