I like this. Sounds like I'll have to make a trip up to TIC by the end of the month.

You my friend may soon have the big picture of this little car squeezed back into that packed shop of yours to get the painted body panels on.

Hey - glad to hear it! My car is at a race shop in Ohio (Turnin Concepts) and they are building a custom harness for me with my ECU. Expect to see me at the Canton and Cartersville cruises with my car soon!

Default Subi mid engined track day car

Just found this thread last week and read from the beginning with great interest because we have been building a mid engined, open 2 seat trackday/road car that will be offered in kit form.

I am sorry to hear that Pook is not making these cars because it looks like a great car from a great guy.

Our car is designed to use a WRX drivetrain with a 5 speed, but the prototype has an EZ 30R 6 cyl that we turbo'd (copied Perrin's 6 cyl build for the most part). It is doorless, like the Pook car, but not exo.

If anyone is interested, I will share info, but don't know if I should start a new thread (or if I am allowed to). I don't remember how I found this thread, and if I search the forum for "mid engine" it does not come up. What heading is it under?

I have not been talkative enough. This is only my 4th, and I need 10 in order to start a new post. Kind of a strange rule if you ask me, but there are probably good reasons that I have not considered.

Is your car finished yet?

Default Punch list

Although there are many little detailed items that are remaining (and some of these may already be completed), here are the main tasks left -

Finish wiring harness and weather tight connections
Install ECU in water tight box
Modify fuel tank for fuel pump system
Install fuel tank, filler neck and fuel line connections
Install engine
Fab custom stainless exhaust (a mere 18" long)
Install new Griffin radiator and slim puller fan
Install new Autometer gauges
Tune car on chassis dyno

Transport car back to Pook for body panel installation
(body panels currently being painted)

That seems like a lot to get done in 16 days so I would guess it may spill over a bit into May.

It always takes longer than expected. I hate when people ask, "when will it be finished?", because when I give a date I end up a liar. I've built a bunch of cars (8 were prototypes and about 18 were "production"), and as long as they are not in series production, they take forever.

If you need any special fab stuff done locally (I'm in Atlanta), I can introduce you to people that can help. My thing is primarily suspension and frame design and suspension component design. I do a lot of fabrication, but I am not the best by a long shot...

I think you are just N of Atl, and there is a guy on Bald Ridge Marina Rd., Danny Bytnar that is good for bending and welding tube. I'll give you his contact info if you want. He bent my roll hoop tube for the latest Subi powered car and helped me build a prototype chassis I designed for the Aspiron (to be built in the Czech Republic). He has an internal mandrel bending machine that can do tight radii if required.

I think my dyno work will be at Forged Performance in Marietta. Where are you going?

I think the 10-post rule is probably just to deter spammers. It's annoying, but less annoying than new spam threads every day selling fake Rolexes and V1agra.

Pook, did you ever get a chance to look into the cnc bending/laser cutting of the frame tubing?

OK. It may be of help to anyone doing EZ30 turbo too. It will probably be a couple days because I will follow the rules and not post BS for the sake of it.

These things can be great, but volume is the key. I suspect if you had runs of around 20 cars it starts to make sense.

ah yes, assumptions! I do production design mechanical engineering day in and out (and also know the quote I had on my crazy one-off roll cage) and understand how these things work. For the time spent in bending and coping, if you actually look at how long that takes in production time, I think it'll pay off a good while before then.

If you assume $100 an hour (not far off for skilled shop labor), that makes it a 40 hours of work to swallow a $4,000 bending and cutting cost. Those 40 hours would free up a lot of install driveline, brackets, pedals, etc.

That sounds interesting. I will be investigating...

Default Headlights

I'm really wanting to see if my first selection of headlights can be used on this car. I know the tiny LED headlights are installed but I have a couple of concerns.

1) They are so small that there will be no lateral illumination because they sit lower than the top of the tires.

2) The fact that they are LED - I don't know of any car that has LED headlights that are approved for use on a public road.

The projector halogen Hella lights I'd purchased some time a go have a DOT stamp and are hi/low within each light.

The challenge is to have Adam Beck (fender fabricator) or TIC create some sort of housing and mount that will have the lights positioned where the LED lights currently sit. It is a bit difficult to determine the position of the new lights without the hood in place to check for proper clearance. But, with the hood sitting so close to the frame and the outboard chassis tube being mostly exposed with the hood installed I hope it can be done.

There are a few luxury cars out there with LED headlights and even a couple of motorcycles. I don't think they will care how the light is generated as long as it meets the requirement for beam pattern.

I know there are tons of running lights, indicator lights and driving lights out there that are LED but I still can't find one LED headlight that is DOT approved for use on a car or motorcycle.

I don't even think Audi has them available in the USA yet -
http://www.thecarconnection.com/news...verywhere-else

The LED headlights that I have installed are motorcycle aftermarket units, but they are not DOT approved.

I think Cadillac has been using them for a few years. They are on 2008 Lexus LS600h and the Audi A8 luxury sedan. http://www.harley-davidson.com/shop/...cle-headlights - they have LED headlights here - read elsewhere that they are DOT approved. This information comes from the internet so it can't be wrong.

Well there you go. At least now if I keep these LED lights and I get stopped and asked questions I can rattle off a couple production car names using LED headlights in my defense.

My only remaining concern is the lateral lighting that will be blocked by my tires. It really shouldn't be much of an issue as I doubt that I will spend a lot of time driving at night.

Thanks for the replies.
