Well your '06 stock WRX wheels are 17 inch so buying a set of 16 inch tires will not work.

What Jeff said.

Size: 215/45-17

If however for some reason you want to install 16-inch diameter wheels, take notice that only some will clear the front 4-pot calipers. Do your homework first.

Does anyone know if 205 / 50 / 17s will be okay on my 2006 WRX wagon?

If it is your stock wheels yes they would fit, rim width range for that tire is 5.5-7.5". I would rather have 215s though like above said.

i run 215/50/17 on my stock rims. little bit more sidewall than the stock tires for added pothole/rut protection

He means trying to fit a set of 16" tires on 17" wheels won't work, which is true.

Some of the STI's for example will have brakes that are too big for a smaller wheel to fit on. So there's only a certain limit of how small a wheel you can go down before it doesn't fit over your brakes. i.e. you can't get a really fat tire on 14" wheels to fit on your car because of the brakes size even though it may be overall the same diameter.
