Default Throw Out Bearing Noise?

I recently noticed a fairly pronounced throw out bearing whine in my '02 WRX transmission. The car has 11K miles.

Those of you with a similar vehicle, are you noticing a similar whine when you let your foot off the clutch with the car in neutral? Is this the beginning of a possible bearing failure?

I've got the same issue with my WRX. I took it to the dealer and they said they'd look it. This is after they said "It's not a big deal, really, you could live with it" BUt that's not acceptable.

I also get a whining noise that dies away after a few seconds right after I take it out of first.

Yes, I have started to notice the same noise too. I have 7500 miles and it became more noticable after installing an STi transmissio mount. It was probably there all along.

I will post updates if it gets louder over time.

I have the same trouble with my RS. I took it in to the dealer and I have an appointment to have the tranny removed and checked next Wednesday. I'll post any updates.

Are you just describing when the throw out bearing goes out and when the clutch is out is makes alot of noise but goes away when the clutch is pushed in? Most throw out bearings make that rattling whine noise when they are going out. Its just something that they do. If you're also one of those people who sit at a stoplight with their foot on the clutch rather then using neutral you need to stop doing that. It wears the throw out bearing out quicker then if you just take it out of gear and let off the clutch pedal.

I've owned a lot of cars, ranging from a honda civic to an M Roadster, all of which I regularly held the clutch in at stoplights. I don't seem to remember, after putting tens of thousands of miles on each of their OEM clutches hearing this noice, EXCEPT in the rare instance when a throw out bearing was about to go. Usually, it came in a normal wear cycle for the clutch.

Whatever the cause, you can not possibly tell me that holding the clutch in at stoplights would cause a throwout bearing to fail after 11,000 miles. That's just silly.

These throw out bearings in the WRX is a pull style throw out bearing and if you've ever seen them they are nothing like some of the aftermarket stuff that is out there. They look really fragile. You can wear out a throw out bearing in 11,000mi just the same way a bad habit might wear out a clutch disc. If its not the throw out bearing the only other thing I could think of it being is that one of the springs in the hub has suffered some damage and now the cover plate is rattling. Clutch shudder can damage those springs pretty easily.

I have the same noise, that you discribed, with my wrx. I took it to Irvine Subaru. Without taking a look at the car, the service guy said that it is normal and all MT have this noise. It sounded like they did't want to take my tranny a and fix it. So I told them never mine. I just deal with the noise and keep fooling myself that it is normal. It's the Subaru things

"No" it is not normal. It is the type of Service that we get from Subaru.

I have about 10k miles on my car now. I just hope the noise gets louder and may be the car wouldn't move before I hit 36000 miles. Wait! the bearing is part of tranny it should be 60000 miles. Am I write?

I wish the noise is louder than the engine noise, so the Irvine Subaru wouldn't say it is normal. May be they will say it is normal and the subaru things even if it is louder than the engine noise.

Got it too it seems...

Funny thing is that my clutch is an STi RA so is the flywheel. Throwout bearing was changed at the same time as the clutch, OEM one. That was 12000km ago...

Oh well... there's just no way out, STi or not...
