Default auto up window mod...

Has anyone ever come accross an one push auto up window mod? My legacy has auto down on the drivers side...but that's it. I don't know much about electronics, but I don't think it would be impossible (or even that hard) to mod it for one push up...and possibly mod all windows...even the moonroof maybe? So jealous of my buddies VW/Audi's with auto moonroof.

Also having a weird clutch noise? When I downshift and let the clutch out, makes a quick ticking noise...similar to that of a mountain bike when you stop pedaling. Any ideas? Happens only on downshifts...or if I take my foot off the gas at higher rpms (4k).

thx,
chad

The first gen legacies have auto up and down

They did away with it for safety reasons so people wouldn't squish themselves.....hahaha

I know, it's THE best feature. I wish all cars had it. BMW's have it nowadays, at least the 740iL does. It's too bad they did away with it, as I'm sure most people can handle not rolling themselves up in the windows.

It was for the kids. I know a couple of kids got choked buy the SVX power up windows. I wouldn't have a problem myself but I can see where a child might.

auto up needs a safety shut off when something gets caught.

you better be careful who you let in your ride with this mod.

This wouldn't be too hard of a mod - All you would need is to get switches like the driver side door switch but that would have both an auto up and an auto down position - I think I've seen those for sale. Then you would attatch a 555 timer to each switch - and have the polarity be switched between the auto up and auto down. It could be done. Only problem is that if a window was already halfway down - and you then used an auto down switch - you could damage your motor. The first solution to that that I can think of would be to have a microcontroller monitoring the connection to the motor - and if the voltage started to surge in the wire (or would it be the current that would surge? I'd have to think about that) it would cut the power. That would also prevent people from getting hurt by the window - or at least lessen the chances.

I think I remember hearing that the right hand drive wagons (i.e. postal) had an auto up and down drivers switch. Maybe you could swap them out???

You mean that right hand drive subies are sold in the states for post office use? In my driver side door panel all for window controls are together on a circuit board. So, even if a auto up/down switch is made, I doubt that it could be bought without buying the rest of that board. That would be WAY too spendy for my tastes. I'm sure I've seen window switches sold online - I'll have to look for them.

The postal wagons had them because it they were 90-94 legacies, which all had them. After 94 you couldn't get a RHD legacy in the states any more, so you really can't do any swappin......

I beg to differ. I'm fairly sure that the RHD car was available up to MY98. Lack of sales could no longer justify the cost of production. They are out there, but a very rare bird, that.

hmm....you may be right. I don't recall ever seeing any, however that doesn't mean they aren't around. But they may not have the auto up feature as well.

I remember in my 87 supra the auto up was disabled in the states. If you took the switch apart there was one very small plastic tab that you could snap off and VOILA auto up and down

wow...lots of replies...I totally spaced that I ever posted anything...

So there are postal subies in the US? When/where were those used?

Think there's any chance of swapping the power window module/switch/whatever out of a first gen into a 98?

I looove the auto up. All my friends have hand crank windows so just the fact that mine go up and down with the push of a button just makes it sooo much sweeter!

i think you can get the auto up and down windows from autoloc. i tried to find it but i got lazy. here's the link:
http://www.autoloc.com
they also have remote window things and such. i was thinking of trying to add a remote trunk button and the auto up and down windows so if anyone figures out how much it is let me know.

Default Mine has auto UP

My '95 Legacy 2.0 NA has auto up & down on drivers side.

The switch has two 'stages' (for each direction). The first stage is normal operation and the second is auto UP/DOWN.

If you want, I can take a closer look (I wont take the switch apart, though).

My 90 legacy has the same function, half press is normal and hard press is auto up/down.

You know what I want? Intermittant rear wiper

After a little probing around, a little thought, and a little research... I have decided that I know that I can make all four windows have auto up/down both at the driver side controls and at the controls on each door. But, to make this a quality product, it will take me some more research, and a bit of work. So, I decided that if I do make a mod for the windows, I'd like to make a bunch of them - and sell them to anyone interested. What it would involve would be taking all four door panels off, taking apart the window switches, maybe some exacto knife work, maybe some drilling, some mounting, and possibly a little soldering (haven't decided yet). I would provide all parts needed, instructions, and any help that I can reasonably provide. I'm thinking I would charge about $40 plus actual shipping costs. But I might lower this depending on how many people are interested and how cheaply I can get the parts. (If a lot of people are interested I can get good bulk rate deals on all of the parts) On another, vaguely similar note, I also think that I could provide the parts to make an intermittent rear wiper. I don't really know how much it would cost - but maybe $20-30? Not sure. Lastly, I am working on making my sideview mirrors tilt down when I put my car in reverse - and then tilt back up when I take my car out of reverse. Would anyone be interested in buying the parts for that? That would be, of the three, unquestionably the easiest to install. A teeny bit of soldering, some taping, and you'd be done. I think I'd charge like $20 for that. I could have all of these parts finished and ready to ship within a couple of weeks. I guess I'd take checks or cash as payment.

then you'd see the curb right next to your car, instead of way behind it?

might be interested in the power window switches........
