I can think of very few situations where smoke is good in a car. Lucky you didn't kill yourself. Have you ever heard of brake fade? Try using the engine to slow down on a downhill run part of the time to avoid this next time. Better pads will help, as will drilled or slotted roters. EBCs are good for the price.

Snowman:

Smoke from your brake pads means you overheated them. The "soft" feeling in your brakes is probably brake fade from overheating the brake fluid. You profile says you've got a 96 Impreza 2.2. When did you last change the brake fluid and bleed your brakes? Old brake fluid tends to collect water. That water boils when it gets hot and makes water vapor in your brake lines. Voila! Brake fade.

Based on this post and your "Stupid Ticket" post, I think it would be a REALLY good idea for you to get into a drivers' school. There's a lot about performance driving that they don't teach you in drivers' ed. You owe it to yourself and everybody else on the road to get some training as to exactly what you and your car are capable of. Check into your local BMW CCA, SCCA, or PCA clubs -- I bet you can find a performance driving school with instructors on a closed track. Also, if you're going to push the car hard, you need to pay very close attention to maintenance. That means a lot more than changing oil and filters if you want to drive the car hard.

Finally, look into autocrossing or track days or some other off-the-street form of driving fun, please. There's a lot of people on the public roads that get put at risk by under-trained drivers attempting high-speed canyon runs and generally overdriving their cars on the street. Some entry fees and training are a hell of a lot cheaper and safer than balling up your car or, even worse, hurting someone else. Be safe, and keep the shiny side up.

hey jds i do race scca when i can but come of us have to work on the weekends(me). im 16 and paying for everything in my car even gas, working part time so i have bills like most people. i also do know the limits of my car trust me on that one i came close to allot of crashes (not my foult) like being cut of on the freeway going 85 and having my car going sideways into the bericade, so i know my car. i also keep good maintnence on my car, oil every 3500 w/ synthetic so i got it. but thanks for trying to make me feel bad.

p.s. most driving schools cost 200 for a day (i have to pay bills) so why dont u stop picking on people u dont even know!!! :monkey:

dude....the pope doesn't fart!

anyway....did you do damage?....

there's no way to tell unless you get your brakes checked. go to a shop and have them check padwear and rotor runout. also, if you haven't had your brake fluid changed, you might want to consider that if you're at or over 60k miles.

and stop flicking people off...it's rude

So it's better to spend $5k or so when you stuff your car into a canyon wall than to spend a few hundred on a drivers' school? Yeesh. I hope for your sake you remain invincible forever.

I'm not trying to make you feel bad. I'm trying to keep you from killing yourself or somebody else.
