Default Need help with 17in wheels-max tire size

I bought a set of 17x7.5 ET48 wheels for my 03. I know the guides give limits to wheel width to tire width, but if I put 255/40-17 tires on the wheels, will they fit under the wheelwells and not rub the stock suspension? I would normally put 225/45-17s, but I can get a great deal on the wider tires. Thanks for any suggestions

I autocross and used to fitting 245/45-16 tires on a 16x6.5 wheel (for a stock class vehicle). I remember a guy that would fit a 225 tire on a 13x5 Honda rim! Looked like a cantiliver slick!

255/40R17 require 17x8.5" wheels minimum. The wheels you listed are a full inch too narrow to use those tires. The widest tires you can fit on your wheels are 225/45R17.

Remember that 45 sidewall is designed to stretch more than 40 sidewall.

in terms of fender clearance, 255 at +48 clears the strut fine but is very close to the fender. Rear fender roll recommended.

235/45 will fit fine, probably even 245/45 (which is pushing it IMHO), but it's true that a 40 series sidewall won't have as much give.

on stock height 255s wont rub and you can fit those on 17s but i wouldnt recommend it. just buy federal 235. the fit and look will be about the same.

I think you mean, 8.5" is recommended. Don't we do this like every other day?

And no again. A 235 will certainly fit. A 245 would "fit" as well. You are the king of tire/wheel overstatements.

Anyway OP, I think you'd be happiest with a 225, but a 235 will certainly fit, without issue, depending on the tire. On a stiff summer, the 235 will feel fine. With a softer sidewall, you probably don't want to give up the steering response of the 235 compared to the sharpness of the 225.

245 on 7.5 inches starts to feel a bit sloppy, even on stiff tires, let alone a smashed on 255. There's just no reason for it.
