Angry Where'd my gas mileage go?

Well, I drove all highway this week, about 300 miles, I averaged 22.5 mpg!!!
I didn't have a heavy foot, not alot of quick starts and I have a 2.2 liter engine!
I know the heat cuts down on gas mileage, but it's supposed to get around 28 to 30!!!
Suggestions?
I have a new air filter, new fuel filter and new plug wires! Think it could be the plugs?
Bry.

Wow, I wish I'd get 22.5 MPG. Driving to and from work, on the highway with a little stop & go, and I only get about 18.5.

Hmmm, new fuel filter. Did you make sure you cinched down those hose clamps on the inlet and outlets to the filter? If not, you might be dribbling away those extra MPG.

Wilkey

Even my wife's Forester gets 25 MPG.

crap!!!!

you just reminded me that i changed my air filter back to OEM before taking the car in to the dealer, then i had all kinds of problems with the dealer, and they pissed me off so bad i FORGOT i took out the K&N filter. so i've been driving w/ the factory filter in it for 4 days now.

gotta get that swithed back tonight....

probably already screwed up the ECU readings.....

I'm gonna pick up some better plugs tonight, I just reset my ECU and I'm not gonna drive it hard.
I also put a dryer hose from my front brake duct hole up to the cone filter, maybe that'll help the Air to Fuel ratio
Hopefully it'll help a little bit, I'm tired of filling up every 3 to 5 days, where as I'd get 32 mpg in my old 1.8 liter Subaru (*sniff sniff)

Here is a stupid question. Have you been running the Air Conditioning recently? A/C will kill your gas milage....

Nope, windows down, shirt off, high speeds and lots of wind. Debated on taking the windshield out for some more cooling action, but I figured the bugs in my teeth wouldn't be so much fun.

So whats the reccommended plug gap again? .44?

Actually, A/C is better for your gas mileage than running with the windows down. The little bit of drag placed on the engine by your A/C compressor isn't as bad as the aerodynamic drag of running around with your windows down.

As for plug gap, 0.44" is nearly half an inch, Bry. If you can get the spark to fire across that I'll be impressed! For my 2.5L DOHC the recommended plug gap is 0.039 - 0.043" (1 - 1.1mm). I just checked mine the other day, hence the numbers are fresh in my mind.

Changed the plugs, replaced them with the NGK V-Power (same as stock)
Reset my ECU
Put some dryer hose up to the cone filter
Drove the car with a featherweight foot and shifted religiously at 3,500 RPM and I'm back to 28.5 mpg!!!
I'm going to put some fuel injector cleaner in today just to clean all the poop cheap gas leaves in your system.
Idle is smooth, acceleration is perfect! I love when my car is happy
Thank you for all your suggestions!
