probably comparable... i bought these for my 11wrx 215-55-16 size. I wanted more snow tire vs ice tire.

i have friends with this tire and seems to be pretty durable... over 2-3 years of usage.

I have these tires and we only got a little snow this year so far (nothing like the lake effect you have) i grew up in Cazenovia ice fishing and learned to drive winters on those hills. the iPikes are a good snow tire, like most snows, unless you have the studs in them they are only so so on ice.

i've had the w409 i-pikes on my wrx for the last 4 winters and the w404's before that, they have been a very good winter tire up here in alaska, as for the general altimax arctic's, they have been rated better then the hankook's in winter performance and from what i've seen of them the tread pattern is very similar but the sipping seems deeper and the rubber seems a little softer then the hankooks, i've recommended either one of these tire's for winter driving and have sold both kinds up here.

So far the 409 tires are really good, rain, little snow/slush. We had some slush and I slammed on the breaks and the tires never skipped a beat. No deep snow yet can't wait to go out and play when we get slammed. But of course these are snow tires so high speeds and hard breaking is something I have to get us to, first set of snows I have ever owned.

The i*Pike W409's are pretty good bang for the buck. I'm on my 2nd winter with them coming from Gislaved Nord*Frost 5's and Viking SnowTech's prior to this set and I'd say they're really good for what they are.
All I can say though is since we've had more of a mild winter as far as snowfall goes in the past 2 years that, I should have saved myself some money by going with the W300 since they're a harder compound and better for driving on roads without snow but still sub-zero temperatures. Basically, it will just last longer than the softer but better performing snow tire, W409.

why don't you recommend the ipikes? i have a set now on my oem bbs wheels and they handled the 1-2" of snow we got today in the DC area with ease. sidewalls are definitely softer than the blizzak lm-22s i had last winter.

why do you recommend the icebear w300 over the ipike w409?

^ That's my question as well.

It seems like the OP is seeking a "deep-winter" tire, in comparing between the iPikes and the Altimax Arctic.

But wtwwholesaletire's recommendations are either in the "All-weather" category or in the "Performance Winter" category.

??????

Why not recommend, instead of the Nokian WRG2, the Hakka R?

Why substitute the W310 and W300 in place of the W409?

I had the Icebears and this year I'm on Ipikes. We haven't had an evil snowfall yet but in moderate snow I"m liking the Ipikes better. Icebears are excellent in the dry/wet, drives and feels like an all-season. But, get into the deep or slippery stuff and they never inspired confidence. Car always felt squirly and not planted. They did get me through a 2 ft snowfall mind you so they do work. IMO a great tire for those who live further south and only occasionally deal with snow. Can't speak too much about the Ipikes since we've had limited snowfall. In the dry/wet they are decent, they don't squirm like some (Toyo GO2+) winter tires do on the highway.

i'm very pleased with the ipikes in snow and on ice but they leave a lot to be desired in the dry of course.

the squishy sidewalls prevent me from wanting to push the car on dry/wet pavement which i don't mind

^^ Coming from Toyo G02+ tires that constantly wander on a straight highway I find the Ipikes handle good enough for a winter tire.

I've been running a set of these (16", no studs) on my 2.5i for 2 months, now. They've handled snow, ice, slush and dry roads quite well. I had Ice Bear W300's on my last car, and subjectively, they seemed a bit better for dry highway travel. The I*Pikes are more for deeper snow, and can be outfitted with studs, but seem a bit "squirmy" on dry highways. It all depends on your own driving conditions. Even a mediocre winter tire will be far better than any all-season in the cold.
