Default Are these tires usable for 1 season?

I just bought a 2011 WRX and need something to run this winter. I have 2 options.

1- 16" Legacy "snowflake" wheels with barely-used 205/55/16 Fuzion VRi tires

2- 17" Rota SDRs with 235/45/17 Bridgestone Turanza tires. These were pulled off of my wife's TL when I put new Continentals on it.

I already own the Rotas, but was offered the 16" Legacy wheels and tires in trade. I can either run 16" 205s on the '11 WRX, or I can run the used 235s on my 17" Rotas.

Opinions?

in canada, all season tires are no-season tires.....

sell both sets for whatever and get a decent set of winter. just look in 2011wrx winter wheels thread.... all sizes / wheels / tires are discussed/shown.

looks like those bridgestones are at what 5/32"? If you can't rock a winter set, I'd take the fuzions over those bridgestones

I don't own both sets. I own the Rotas and was offered the LGT snowflakes in trade.

Probably around that depth.

I love the snowflakes...I just wish that the tires on the wheels I am getting were 215s and not 205s.

the tires in the pics have enough tread you could get by in dry and wet as long as you don't push it too much, but I don't think I'd try them in snow/ice. I'm not sure how cold it gets in the winter months where you are, but in NY I wouldn't use them IMHO.

Kind of resigned to that, as much as I hate to downsize from 17" ---> 16" for the winter...

You just bought a nice new car, it would really suck to send it off the road this winter and bang it up. Sell what you have, buy 16" tires and snows from tirerack. They come mounted and balanced, and you are set for the next 3-4 seasons. I spent a month trying to figure out used tire/wheels for my car. In the end, the tire rack package was the best deal considering you are going to have to pay to mount a 215 tire on a 16" wheel, since no-one has used sets in that size.

I ended it with older LGT snowflake wheels with 205/55/16 A/S tires. Not the perfect setup, but good enough for the winter. I traded my Rotas, the used A/S tires, and some used 3-season 215/45/17s for the LGT wheels plus cash.

I also have a Jeep Comanche on 30" AT tires, if the weather actually looks bad. I don't like driving it long distances, but it gets the job done.

While it seems easy to say "oh, just drop another $650 on wheels and snow tires" it is not that simple, especially after putting down a nice downpayment AND the fact that this month is Christmas.

If that means that I drive my truck in lousy weather for this season, so be it.
