News New Subaru 10 inch subwoofer info......

Hello all!

I've been curious about the 10 inch powered subwoofer (by Kicker) in the Subaru brochures for the 2011 WRX's.
Well, I got in touch with Jamie at subarugenuineparts.com and got some straight answers (since my local dealer was completely lost ).

Well, turns out the Jan. 2011 date isn't gonna happen.
April 2011 is the release date now.

And the price?
HOLY cow! Brace yourself.......
$499.99 retail!
$457.50 is subarugenuinepart's projected price.

I don't know about you all but (no offense to subarugenuineparts, their discount is appreciated!) that sounds REALLY high to me.
Darn it.....and I was looking for a nice OEM fitting improvement for the gross lack of low-end audio in my WRX's system.

Anyone else have any more info?

It's going to be 100watts...

IMO not worth it. If it was priced at around 300 sure it would be a good option, but 100watts for 500bucks...I'd rather get the audio integrations enclosure and sub. That's around 350.

That's what I was hoping they'd say; "around $300-350".
But $450+? Darn it.

I have the sinking feeling that'll be a big DUD in terms of sales for Subaru.

Holy crap. I guess that is what you get when they charge $200 for that ancient little Panasonic bumper under the seat.

I got the little sub when I bought my car, it is a good time for SOA to rip you off, less sensitivity to price.

But I think this is a little excessive. Shame on you SOA! You could have convinced Fuji to just offer a better basic sound system and charge $500 more for that. I guess SOA has the big nutz to try to fleece their customers when their sales are up. We'll see how that works when we all get tired of plastic dashboards.

I just got my Audio Integrations enclosure today. With the Nasioc discount, I'll be under the best price for this thing with amp and driver. And the AI will be more convenient for those with the hatch anyways.

I'll keep my AI box and Type-R. Sounds great, and gets loud when I want it to, which I doubt can be said for the Kicker/Subaru unit

The Basslink is not bad. Still $299 retail puts it awfully close to the AI setup if you choose modest amp and driver, which will at least be easier to mount and integrate.

So $280 for just the enclosure?? far from cheap...

You can find the Basslink for under $200.. I found it for $179 not including shipping though.

Still about what I paid for one maybe 6-7 years ago. I guess those dollars are worth less now, but profit margin must be high for Infinity on that one. If Subaru could have packaged that up with a harness and some mounting for $300 they might have had a hit. The $500 plastic Kicker box isn't going to cut it.

Sound, price, easy install...pick 2...unless you like Subaru accessories then pick 1.

Would have been better to keep all this info in the original thread where it would be easier to find with the search later down the road.

Here is what I said, and why anyone who buys or even seriously considers buying this thing is a bit... Well, goofy (trying to be nice )

SURE, its factory.

But lets look at the facts, and why ordering this with your car is a colossal waste of money. If you want a sub, go aftermarket.

1. Its ugly. Integration into the look of your interior is, well, nonexistent.
--An aftermarket enclosure can be carpeted with something very close to, or just like, the oem upholstery.

2. Cost. I don't think we have a price anywhere yet, but I promise you that you could do an 8 and a small amp for less.
---NOT TO MENTION--- If you order this with your car, you have just financed it over 3-7 years. You are going to pay close to double for it. For something 7 out of 10 of you will replace within 6months-1 year anyway.

3. What you actually get. Its just a kicker driver, with an incredibly underpowered amp. Kicker has some OK stuff, but I assure you that whatever driver they put in there, is the cheapest of the cheap, and is what will essentially be a $5 woofer that kicker stuck their name on. And For a moment, lets suspend disbelief and believe that the amp puts out a good and true 100W RMS. Even if it was, 100 watts is far from enough to effective power AND CONTROL the cone movements. But now lets get back to reality. That amp is going to be AT BEST equivalent to a $29 ebay special "100 watt" amp.

So what we have here, is AT BEST, a $20 woofer, and a $29 amp, in a plastic box. (btw that box, will almost certainly have serious resonance problems. If you DO make the mistake of buying this, I highly suggest pulling the woofer out and slapping some dynamat chunks on the flat surfaces inside the box)

You could buy
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...roduct_id=9518
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...roduct_id=6417
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...&product_id=13

Which comes out to $125 before shipping

Then you have 2 choices, ultra cheap option
http://www.woofersetc.com/p3521/SQ11...Sealed-Box.htm

Or pay someone to build you a custom corner box for say $100-150

I promise you it will sound FAR better. And likely cost the same or less.

And you wont be paying for it over the next several years.

Like my buddy says

Built>Bought.

I agree with those saying just get an AI enclosure instead of $450 on that Kicker setup.
For the difference in price you can put a decent sub and amp in the car if you shop around.
And the AI box fits like a glove and looks like it really is factory.

When I was buying my '11 Hatch, looking at the Kicker box to be installed as well. Then I saw on picture of the unit and its a free standing box that sits behind the rear seat. Sure enough, I passed on that as I am looking for a "steath" box so that I can lay down my back seat and not move my sub box.

OR, find a reputable builder that can make you one. But yes, both those companys make a good quality box. Still sounds like a lot of dough to me...

I'm thinking it might be fiberglass time after I get back from vacation?!?!?!?

Got some ideas about a box and ways to mount it so it is removable and more flush. I cannot justify spending $300 for an enclosure. I am sure it is top notch but I might give it a try.

Love projects!!!

Audio Integrations. Expensive, worth every cent.

Here's mine, with a Focal P25DB sub installed. The grille is from some random Polk audio sub, bought it off a local audio install shop from their leftover crap. Painted it black (it was silver with a Polk logo) and cut a notch in it using a Dremel to fit the profile of the curve in the Audio Integrations enclosure.

I have a 2013 Impreza sport 5 door is it the same body as the WRX? I didn't even look at them but I tried to convince my wife they were the suv model. She didn't believe me for one second!
