Hey guys, Im visiting the Falls for New Years with the old lady and was wondering how the Oakes hotel was. I have reservations and from what I have read and seen its pretty nice. Any comments and or suggestions for things to do while we are visiting Canadia???

Can't help you too much here, but if you aren't already aware, check out tripadvisor.com for hotel reviews. You'll probably get a lot more reviews there.

The Oakes is well located. I don't know anything about it other than that. Niagara Falls is (as expected) is largely a tourist trap. The falls themselves are nice (lit up in winter), but the Casino/Clifton Hill area is like a mini Las Vegas.

If you want something a bit more romantic/upscale/educational try driving north along the Niagara Parkway/River Road. This will take you to the Whirlpool Gondola, past the Botanical Gardens, by Queenston Heights (war of 1812), through the Village of Queenston (Laura Secord's home), past winerys, past Fort George and eventually ending in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Niagara-on-the-Lake was once the capital of Upper Canada and is the one of the oldest towns on the Great Lakes. There are lots of great little restaurants and boutique hotels there.
