Default 2.5 hybrid stumbling, missfires

A guy in town just swapped a 2.5 block/2.0 head hybrid in to his WRX and it's having some problems now. A CEL is flashing with missfires on cyls 1, 2 and 4, it's stumbling at idle maybe every 15 seconds or so, and missfires and pops when you try to move it. Opening the throttle in neutral sounds alright.

There's a ticking noise that sounds like it's coming right from the middle. We thought it might be the idle air control valve until we realized it was missfiring under load, too. The ticking sounds like a solenoid actuating and it'll tick twice randomly, but maybe 5-10 seconds between on average.

Any ideas?

Here is an update in case anyone else is having a problem like this:

Just got a chance to work on this again. Re-did the timing multiple times, finally started before we it back together and it idled just fine, got it put back together, and it ran like it was before. Shut car off...unpluged MAF sensor, and it runs pretty well, hoping that is the only problem. We will be finding out soon.

What cam gears did you use? I haven't found any info on if wrx/sti gears are the same, as well as gear spacing from ej20/ej25 deck to deck heights, which may throw timing off.

I didn't build the motor. I bought from one of the guys in our club. But the only difference between the 2.0 and 2.5 is the bore, not stroke.
