Smile

I remember my first Subaru. What a beautiful 22B it was... <sigh>

What year did Gran Turismo 2 come out? Or was that the GT1? Sadly, a video game was the beginning of my obsession. It was probably that way for some of the younger pre-GD/GG WRX crowd, no?

When I first took possession of a second-hand 90 Legacy Lsi in 95.

The 2.2L engine in that car was indestructable (went 150,000 miles with just routine maintenance)!!! Nothing like the 2.5L engine that was in my GT . . . (front seal, valve cover seal, and rear seal failure at 50,000 miles, dual headgasket failure at 80,000 miles, VERY noisy lifters at 60,000 miles) . . . but damn, I love the look of the car!!

HaHa! We had an 83 GL Wagon too, and that baby could take some abuse!!! Could about climb a wall in Lo-Range! We were at Tahoe in the Blizzard of 83 and 3 of the 4 couples there that week came back the next year with 4X4's. We fell for the Subie after seeing so many of the locals thrashing through the snow with them. My buddy bought an S-10 Blazer(puke!!!) and the other one bought a 4-Runner, not bad but I could flat out lose him going over Donner. That was a sweet little car! I miss her!

Default Subarus

The SVX turned my head when it came out, then they stopped making it. I forgot about Subarus for awhile, then I played Gran Turismo on the PS, and started driving and customizing virtual WRXs while I was in College.

Unfortunately, my college car (an '86 Camry with 197,000 miles) died prematurely and I had to get another car fast as a poor college student with a lot of debt. So I purchased an '87 Ford Thunderturd, which was a bad idea, because the car lived up to its nickname and cost a fortune to keep on the road.

Finally, when the Thunderturd V-6 became a V-3 (pistons started losing compression due to crappy engine design), I was in the market for another automobile. My friend Geoff said, "Why don't you look at Subaru Legacys?" I found one used (my '92) for a good price and called the guy selling it.

I was impressed by the test drive, I kept thinking "there's no way this car only has 130bhp and 135lb/ft of torque!" So I brought her home on Feb. 2, 2000 and I have been a Subaru fanatic ever since. I still have her, and recently added a stablemate (an '02 WRX) in February 2002.

I am thoroughly impressed by the quality of these cars, they have been the most reliable that I have owned. Maybe I just owned crappy cars before ('83 Maxima, '76 Monte Carlo, '78 Oldsmobile Omega, the camry, the Thunderturd)?

Same here. Saw it in '92 and bought one in '95. Great car. Still turns heads. Replacing head gaskets this weekend.

1976 - Just came back from living in Japan and had seen a ton of them there. Never really got to appreciate them until I bought a new 76 Wagon (GL I think) with Hi/Lo. That was in NW PA and I drove it for three years through thick and thin in Maine. Sold it for basically what I paid for it three years later with 50K miles on it and I hear that it's still running (some kid is using it as a rally car - running it in the woods somewhere). You could pull stumps with that thing in Lo Range but even in Hi Range it was turtle slow. Wish I had brought it when we migrated to the land of permanent sunshine. It would have been a great car to teach the kids on.

I have really no clear timeframe (1995-7) other than when I was introduced by a friend to a game that I played on my parents 486DX2/66. The game was the orignal Rally Championship for PC, not the not-so-new RC2K.
I had to play at 320x240 res. but I was hooked on the Subaru Legacy 555 Rally car, granted my friend suggested that the Legacy was the best.
I was so intent on getting a Impreza after watching rally highlights, but when I went out car shopping, I fell in love with a '98 Silver Legacy sitting on the lot that called my name (not really, but if it could talk I'm sure it would have) and the car was a really good deal to boot.

/Mark

Note: Also practicallity of being able to put friends in my car for long drives comfortably and its refined lines made the Legacy a better choice. Just wish I had a hole in my hood like the GT I would like to add the the SVX is a sexy B@#ch!! And one day I'll one, or atleast the EJ33 that runs it.

In 1988 my father got the 1800GL Wagon. This is THE car, it's still running with 265000 km on the clock and no major engine work done - yet. It has a serious rust problem, though...

Now we have four Subarus in my family: my brother has a '90 Legacy 2.2 Wagon, my mother has a Vivio and I own the 1800GL Wagon and a '95 Legacy 2.0 Wagon.

One would think we'd get a fair discount when getting a new one...

I have been aware of Subarus since the early 1970ies. Those early models were somewhat prone to rusting out. I test drove or at least LOOKED at an '82 GL hatchback, but eventually settled on a Toyota Tercel for my first NEW car (less money, more headroom, very substantial subframe, and serious anti-rollbars that suggested better handeling then the car could deliver).

I test drove a 4wd Subaru Justy when they first came out (very fun car to drive around town), but the dealer wanted way too much money for it. Finally in '99 when it finally became time to trade in my '87 SAAB 9000 Turbo, I wanted a small good handeling car with good headroom, with some of the "luxury" of the SAAB, so I settled on the Legacy GT Limited. Knowing what I know now, I think I would have been better off with a base Legacy L (without a sunroof), and simply swapped in a performance suspension & brakes.

While I like the basic handling & reliability of the Subaru the 'LUXURY' touches dont come close to comparing with the old SAAB. Also the SAAB (even with a turbo) got better fuel economy then the Legacy, and was much better for long-distance drives.
Having said all that, I like my Subaru and plan to remain a Subaru customer for a while.

That was when a buddy had Leone Sport Wagon - good car, I'll never forget the balance/handling it had considering the skinny rubber and tall stance. I was a closet fan immediately - but it was a bit slow compared with what I had at the time (an R30 Skyline RS - pre-IC, but plenty quick). Then the car saved his life when he was taken out by a drunk driver ...seeing the wreck had me impressed by how it maintained the cabin space around the driver/passengers (the car was a total write off, the engine was under the front seats ).

I was a firm Skyline fan/owner - then the GT-B was released and that was it - just waited for the a deal to come my way. I plonked down the cash and have never looked back. That was in 97...changed over to the B4 in 2000.

Only my 1 Suby in the direct family, but friends have bought 4 since I changed over (not including the guys on here, 3 B4s and a WRX STi). My aunt has one (a BC since new!).

edit for smilie stuff up
