Default Do the STI and WRX sound different

So this debate has started amongst me and some of my Subie friends. I had made a comment on a Youtube video of some STI with my exhaust but it sounded different (I know its probably the quality of the mic on the camera). But it started this debate....Do the STI and WRX sound different?

If you had a WRX 2.0L and an STI 2.5L of the same year with an identical TBE and both have lets say STI catless up pipes, would there be a difference in tone, volume, rumble?

I personally think they woud sound identical to the human ear, to a precise listening device it may differ to a slight degree. If you listened to them both at idle, cruising down a street, or however I think the amount of air being exhausted at those low pressures would be so minimal a difference that the sound wouldn't change. Even if it did change some, if the STI pushes 5psi of boost that causes each cylinder to hold XX cc of air, then the WRX pushing slightly less psi would cause the same cc of air to be forced into each cylinder resulting in the same volume of gases being exhaled into the exhaust manifold ultimately creating...the same sound. Now I do understand the turbos are different but I don't see that changing the overall tone of the exhaust pitter patter.

So I am curious out of pure debate and fun, what you guys think!

Well I voted that they are different, but it depends on the years (bone stock). Also, the sound does change a little bit based on this: "If you listened to them both at idle, cruising down a street, or however I think the amount of air being exhausted at those low pressures would be so minimal a difference that the sound wouldn't change." which I agree with this.

But if we were to modify then yes a big difference.

I think people who know engines can discern very small differences. On the other hand, to most people a Honda and a Subaru sound the same. So the question doesn't make much sense, IMO.

From 12 to 80k miles my sound 07 sti has evolved greatly without doing a thing...

My neighbor [Drives a GT-R and SRT 10 Dodge pickup] says that he had noticed that since 08 to present my boxer rumble has become much more pronounced at low neighborhood street speed, and more aggressive sounding at higher gears.

I have zero mods,he bet me I did have AM exhaust/intake etc...,I won our bet after i gave him green light to inspect...I won a large pizza....I shared half with him...I insisted.
He could not believe it was stock.

Thats why I said me and my Subaru friends, we all love the same boxer rumble, and all to a degree know our share about the mechanics of the workings, so in that context is how I am addressing the question.

I've heard of guys saying how different their exhaust gets through time. Always just kinda dismissed it as the noise just becoming like 2nd nature so you don't hear the same sound as you once thought.

There is a noticable difference..at least I can tell..the 2.5's are almost a little more quiet and have a slight difference rumble.

Well what do you notice? More rasp, more pronounced rumble?

I can tell with a 2.5rs, all they do is get Unequal length headers but the piping is still completely different from a WRX/STI.

I think they sound a little different, hard to explain though. I have a friend with an '07 STi, Invidia G200 - V3 DP, Catess Up, and it is louder with a more pronounced rumble than what my '04 with a V3 DP, Catless Up, and Invidia N1 Race that I had at the time sounded like. The N1 was supposed to be much louder.... Not sure if its the extra half liter the STi has or more boost, but something makes it sound a little different.

-I think it also depends heavily on what type of exhaust they are running, thinner piping and I think the car will be louder.

Does the STi sound different from the wrx?

If you compare both 2.5 liters, not no. However, comparing 2.0 to 2.5's, there be a slight difference, but nothing that makes it stand out. Sounds all the same until you REALLY listen to it.

whoever said hondas and subarus sound alike are dumb literally. hondas sound like they pulled a can of folgers out of the freezer and put it on there exhaust. Subarus have a distinct sound no other car sounds like them out there. nothing compares to the subaru boxer rumble.
this is what my wrx sounds like in this video

^ Exactly I'm coming from the honda world and have always loved the sound of a wrx. Whenever you hear one you know it's the wrx because no other car sounds like it. I've got a wrx w/ a sti genome 2.5" axle back and I love the sound of it!

Of all the Hondas I've had the chance to hear (perhaps too many), the one posted up above sure doesn't sound that bad

Yeah I know exactly what you mean, The boxer rumble is a one of a kind. You put a fart cannon on any number of NA inline cars and you get the exact same sound.

I live in Lebanon, Pa (The area is KNOWN for rice) and I mean we have everything! Just driving through the city to get to the mall or wherever I get reved at, given the "wana race" hand gesture, you name it you'll see it in Lebanon.

This is a video I found to show some of the **** we have (I didn't take the video of even know of this car shows exsistence)

And this is an all too familar sound

2.0 vs 2.5 easily distinguishable in my opinion. I have never had a problem telling the difference between them, the 2.5 is deeper, not that the 2.0's dont sound good but even when they're not near each other i can distinguish them individually. Im sure there are exceptions though haha
