Post Backfire or what?

Hey folks, was driving my 02 WRX the other night casually, and at like 40mph, was in 4th gear and going down a long slow hill and kept hearing muffled popping noises from what sounded like the trunk (almost as if somebody was hitting the floor or wall of the trunk while in it--I don't really know what that sounds like, but I assume it sounded like the noise I was hearing) I was wondering if anybody else has heard this kind of sound? I also heard it in 3rd at a slightly lower speed, and once hit a level straight away, I gave her a bit of juice and heard nothing, but only got it on the down hill.

Any thoughts?
( I have no mods or any perf parts at all)

as far as I know, it's a normal Subie sound. It'll get more pronounced if you get a free flowing exhaust. I believe it's all about the gasses "bouncing" around in the piping 'cause of the layout of the engine. Sounds pretty cool is you ask me. Especially on the downshift.
