Default My Christmas Mod: UKDM Evo rear fog light on an 09 WRX

Had a bit of downtime today on Christmas Eve after getting home so figured I'd get around to this install that I've been meaning to do for a while now. And please, let's not argue about whether people should or shouldn't have rear fog lights....it's personal opinion. I spend alot of time up in the mountains where it actually is foggy or snowing, so I consider it a worthwhile safety mod.

The UKDM WRX's also have these in a similar location, but using the '11+ and 08+ STi lower bumper, which I obviously don't have. So wanted to make it work with the bumper I do have

As to the work itself: This is the OEM rear fog light from the UKDM Mitsubishi Evo VIII/IX, which I ordered from England (and which took forever to get here). I got it because unlike aftermarket lights, the faceplace actually has some curvature to it, so to sit more flush with the slightly curved part of the bumper I wanted to install it on. All in all I think it came out good. I still need to get a bulb (will be using LED bulb since these lights are known to overheat and melt with high-power incandescent bulbs), and the wiring and dash switch is mostly setup already, since I used a rear fog mounted on the back deck last year.

Anyhow, no lit pics yet, and the pics kind of suck, but I can't open the garage door right now because my daughter is asleep right above it, lol.

So will post beter shots later once I finish the wiring and get the bulb, but a few teasers...

The bumper hole. Made sure to measure precisely (using a caliper) to get it perfectly centered and level. Note the top edge cut is just a hair below the lower seam of the rear sheet metal. This was by design.

What look like scratches above the hole are actually just pencil marks, don't worry

With the bracket test-fitted

Installed.

You can see there is a little tiny gap at the bottom edge due to the "double curve" of the lower bumper piece, but you can't see it at all from standing height, only when you get down and look from the level of the exhaust. Not worried about it. Also there is room to slightly tilt the flat lens upward to be more or less perpendicular to the ground, as it should be for maximum light output to trailing drivers.

Note that the gray looks a bit different color from the lower bumper, but that's mostly because of the flash. In regular light they are VERY close. I may paint to match perfectly eventually, once it warms up around here!

EDIT: here are some farther away shots

here's the switch

Yeah, once it warms up enough here to paint anything! Expecting snow tomorrow, and my garage is NOT heated! That said, in person the grays are much closer color. The camera flash is making them look alot different, which isn't the case in regular light.

If possible can you take pics from further away so you can see the entire rear...?

btw, somebody on another forum mentioned it looked off-center, but that's just because I can't take a straight-on picture, apparently.

Here's one with a visual alignment!

That's actually really cool, nice idea! Any body have pics of the OEM rear fog light that's built in on Non-domestic cars?

I was looking for a reason to dislike, but I think it came out great.

in the UK impreza, they take out the right-side reverse light and replace it with a red bulb for the rear fog, at least up until 2011. The 2011+ has it centerline in the little hole that is blank in the US model:

you can see where it "would" go on the US model if one were to order the UKDM housing

Here's a crappy lit pic. Fairly bright, as you can see. Used a 24-LED bulb from autolumination

Haha, didn't mean to make you work more for thinking it was "off". I love the brightness. Got a link for the 24 led you used? Mainly because I have no idea how to use their website...

Now that I look it's actually 32 LED

Bayonet
Item# 32led , Color: Red , Type: 1156
$9.99

There are probably some brighter ones, but I didn't want to spend more than that on a bulb, lol...

http://autolumination.com/1156_1157.htm

it's about 1/3 of the way down the page, named "THE MATRIX II LED BULB"

looks like this:

Looks like a good bulb. Got any pictures of the housing finished with the electrical socket and cover removed. I might have to mold my own if I cant find a way to make mine work.

maybe some other time. Since I have the inner housing mounted slightly angled up (to compensate for the bumper curve), I can't take the lens off without taking the whole assembly out of the bumper, which I'd rather not do much for fear of stripping th holes.

It's a VERY basic socket and reflector though, and the casing is just a rectangular-shaped box...

Very cool. I've always wanted something similar to the rear fog that all the edm vehicles come standard with.

+1 for craftsmanship and simplicity.
