It's obvious why many newer ones have cracks compared to older ones. The bottom lip protrudes out so you will not get many flush hits on the bumper and it will not absorb any impacts. The older bumpers did not protrude and were flatter helping absorb impact. Just like any car that is lowered or has a body kit, you have to be more careful not to even graze anything. Obviously that is hard to do in these cars but that's the big price you pay for slightly better look and function. That's what I keep telling myself as I wait for my 2013 to come in...

The shape may play a bit of a role but the frequent cracks IMO are due to Subaru using thin plastic (maybe for weight savings or maybe cost) that doesn't flex a lot. I bumped into my garage stairs with my 2012 Mustang and didn't do a thing as the bumper cover flexed and absorbed the impact. The same thing with my STI would have cracked it for sure as it's not very strong. When you wax your car you will see that just putting light pressure on the front end starts to make the plastic cave in. Driving through small snow banks shouldn't crack a front end like it does with these cars.

here here! flimsy plastic. It's so flimsy that I'm afraid it is going to crack when im waxing it. I highly recommend reinforcing the plastic by spraying some Flex-All rubber sealant or spray-on pickup truck bed liner type material on the interior of the bumper cover. So far no cracks after 2 scrapes. I also have the clear bra which might help.

My 2011 took a pretty good beating during Nemo. Cracked bumper on the passenger side from what I assume hitting packed down snow during the storm. Missing plastic clips on the fender lining on all four corners, and at some point the gap between the fender and bumper on the passenger side got wider.

All worth it though...

Happened to me this past winter, same car same color (WRB) everything.
I personally enjoy drifting and messing around in the snow, especially upnorth in Atlanta, MI during sno*drift rally races.

The moral of this reoccurring incident for me is, buy some King springs (raises 2011 wrx approx. 1.5 in) if you want to actually have fun driving it. Also, it wouldn't hurt getting a lip (not a super aggressive one) to help give your bumper some extra padding.

Winter rally ftw!

[quote=knighthawk1104;33247714]wait these are made of plastic? not the usual polyurethane like other cars? im a little new to subaru but not that new to cars. it's shocking it's just plastic. my 2011 wrx hatch apparently has a crack also. i didn't see it yet but my dad told my mom which told me.

i think this just might be a minor fault in the design of these bumpers. i really hope they will do something about it because my rear bumper was in a hit and run so im not in the mood to fix the front bumper too.

EDIT: Here are my pics of the damage.

Ouch. I ran over a tire on the highway last year and it split my lower lip in half right in the middle... there was no fixing that.

Autocrossing this weekend....nailed a cone, pretty hard. Cracked my bumper! From a rubber cone!

Probably going to zip-tie stitch it, with white zip ties. Because I'll probably keep cracking it

Mine cracked in the same spot. Except it came from someone driving it up on a ramp and not paying attention. They're paying for repairs now

No one has posted here in a month, but I figured I should instead of starting a new thread.

I too have a crack on my front bumper, which is progressively getting worse. Before I go to the dealership to spend ~$300 to get it fixed, has any one used the 3m flexible epoxy and a flex patch in the inside to fix this? My crack is more towards the middle, leaning a little to the passenger side.

I was thinking of drilling a hole at the tip of the crack, use a dremel to make a "v" cut along the crack, fill it with the epoxy with patch on the inside, sanding it down and then using my airless spray gun to paint the area flat black.

Painting it something like this. ITS IS NOT my picture or car, just found it on a different forum.

I already have a majority of the materials necessary, just wondering if you guys think its a waste of time and should just go straight to the dealership or shop to get it done.

after curing for half hour, I plasti dipped it..black...

I found a crack on my bumper a few months back. My solution?...

I bought a front lip. I lined up the crack and it just so happens to work out that where the screws go in....is right next to the crack on both sides. So now it's relatively secured.

Bad news now...I managed to hit something on the highway and it messed up my bumper so now I need new brackets? I don't know. I'm going to let the dealership deal with that. sigh.

Anyone know of a good place to buy a new bumper cover? After having mine repaired the alignment shop re-cracked it where it was repaired along with additional damage. I've been looking online but I'm having trouble finding one that's not used

I had cracked my bumper from hitting a snowdrift and the lower front part of the bumper cracked, (The part that covers what seems to be the skid plate for the radiator) to fix mine i took the bumper off, ruffed up the backside and used short hair bondo to cover the back side to reinforce the bumper. Works pretty well, have not had the bumper re-crack for the last 2 years.

there is a trick to not letting the crack(s) spread, take a drill bit a little larger than the widest part of the crack itself and drill into the leading edge of the crack so it doesn't create a stress riser, thus expanding the crack.

Welp, I have the same issue on my 2012 wrx. I’ve scraped the bottom of the bumper a bunch and no cracks. But last winter I hit a snow bank that had some hard snow/ice and cracked the bumper in the same spot as everyone else. Went up on the front of the bumper about an inch. I used a piece of somewhat pliable plastic and some epoxy for plastic to reenforce the crack.

When to my first rally cross this past weekend and hit a cone(s) and a chunk of my bumper ripped off right on part of the crack. Also broke the diver side bumper bracket, windshield washer tank and missing some plastic clips in the wheel well.

I know hitting the cone is my fault, but it seems like a lot of damage for a rubber cone. So, I’ll be getting a new bumper soon, hopefully. When I get the new bumper I want to reenforce it by adding something to the inside bottom. The reinforcement might be bed liner or a piece of metal/plastic, and I may add a lip. For other racing events I’m going to get a light bar and a front skid plate to help protect everything.
