Default sreering rack, crossmember tie rods?

Hi, so I'm in the middle of swapping a turbo into my 97 leggy o/b. I'm using a 05 sti crossmember and my leggy rack won't bolt up. I can get the 05 rack BUT are the tie rods the same dia? Will the p steering hoses fit? Someone please give me a thumbs up or thumbs down I would like to get the old wagon on the road again. Thanks

I thought I read that you're supposed to use the tie rod ends off the donor car. But doesn't the stock steering shaft not mate up to the gd sti rack?

I only have the sti crossmember. The leggy Rack is close to fitting but the shape of the rack Is more square on the drivers side. The Sti rack appears to be round at both mounting locations.(going by the shape of the mounting locatios in the sti crossmember) I'm wondering IF I buy the sti rack will I be able to bolt up to the steering shaft and attach my ps hoses?

I def remember Mach v doing a full sti swap and the sti rack wouldn't bolt up to the steering shaft of the gc. It had to be cut down and rewelded together. But that was on a gc. Maybe a leggo is diff?

Hate to be the bearer of bad new, but this happened to me. The rack you're using has differently shaped mounts - if you look at the '05 STI crossmember the rack's mounts are round. You have to get a new rack or crossmember.

Kinda sucks, but oh well did you expect it to be easy?

Let me know if I can help more - I've got some crossmembers laying around.

Ok by the looks of the last two posts, here is what I know. My orig leggy crossmember won't work with my EJ20(t),so it must go. The sti crossmember I bought won't play nice with my leggy rack. The matching sti rack (that I was about to buy) won't play nice with my leggy steering shaft. Given that I don't really desire the quick rato of the STI rack I should just sell the Sti crossmember (or trade if I find the right person) so I can keep my leggy rack and shaft. So yes. Do you have a turbo crossmember that takes the "non round" rack?

You either need the STi rack, or an 04 or older STi/WRX crossmember (I'm not sure when or if the rack design changed on the regular WRX). The best thing you could do is get an older turbo legacy crossmember.

With the WRX/STi crossmember, you'll have to modify the knuckle between the rack and column, you'll need different lines, and you'll need to shim the control arms where they bolt into the rack.

Yes, I do have 2 crossmembers that will work. Shoot me a PM if you want one. I can take some pictures to verify.

Incorrect - I tried every way possible to mount the square forester rack into the STI crossmember and it is definitely not possible without major modification and would be unsafe. Especially if you're asking this question on the internet in the first place.

What did I say that was incorrect? I NEVER said his old rack would bolt into the 05 STi crossmember, we already established that. If he uses the 04 STi crossmember it will, but he will still need to do the things I mentioned. This is the exact set-up I have used on a swap car. If you don't know what you're talking about, don't discount others that have actually done it.

I think I see where the confusion is. If I use a PRE 05 sti wrx crossmember I can use my old ( square) rack , right? So if I'm using my old rack I don't need to modify the steering shaft, I just have to shim the lower arms. Did I get that right? And mostly, thanks. It's great to have some people with experience to bounce things off.

Use a jdm 93-01 wrx or usdm 91-94 turbo legacy crossmember and your existing rack and control arms will bolt in.

Use an 02-04 usdm wrx crossmember and your existing rack and control arms will bolt in but you need to shim the control arms with a couple washers, no big deal.

It's that easy.

This is your best option.

There you go.

MOST EXCELLENT!, thanks everybody, I've got the info, I've PM'd TheLordChesterfield about a rack, and now back out to the chilly garage to do all the thngs that DON't involve the crossmember/steering for a few days..
and your right.. it's not soooo easy.. the devil is, (as usual), in the details.

Must have misunderstood what you meant - just want to make sure he has correct info. I'll snap some pictures of the differences between the 2 and email them to you.
