OMGHi2U 2011 Forester vs. 2011 compass

So my mom is looking for a new vehicle, she currently drives a '08 impreza na. She has been looking at both the 2011 forester base model and the 2011 compass which comes better equipped for less. Subaru will give her more on a trade in but after putting her foot down, she got to the same price on both vehicle's. Now, I don’t need anybody telling me, get the xt forester because it's badass. This is my mom, she doesn’t care, if it moves forward and has a warranty and awd then she's good with that. She can get the forester right now or wait another month for the compass, she is leaning toward the compass for the warranty and more options. Both vehicles in my eyes are very comparable right now and I'm looking for some UNBIASED opinions or experience with the previous model year or anything that would be HELPFULL.
Forester:
MSRP: $20,495
MPG: 21/27
170hp 2.5l na
warranty: 3 year/36000 mile

Compass:
MSRP: $19,295
Following information is from 2010 compass:
mpg: 23/29
172hp 2.4l
warranty: 5 year/100000 mile

The older Jeep Compass was an absolute POS that was beaten with an ugly stick. It was based on the Dodge Caliber.

The newly redesigned ones look way better and apparently drive better too. That being said, you're not going to get many people on NASIOC recommending one over a Forester, myself included.

^ The one my mom is looking at is a base line forester. I like the forester aswell but I can't seem to talk her out of the compass. There both nice and very comparable.

my wife has a 2011 forester 2.5x. so far she loves everything about it. she had a 2006 kia sportage before the forester. the power on the new engine is pretty good. the handling is more car like than the kia was. i never liked the jeep compass. we had a caliber as a rental car before the forester. it was a terrible thing. the cvt tranny is gutless with the 4 cylinder engine. the only jeep i would buy is a grand cherokee. jmo.

While you'll get a longer warranty on the Compass you'll probably also have to make more use of it. Also apparently the Compass will be discontinued in 2012. Sales dropped from 40,000 the first year to just 12,000 in 2009.

I figured the forester was more reliable, but thats good information about the sales dropping. What are the forester sales looking like?

Subaru Has Record Year for Sales in 2010

2010 has been a very good year for Subaru. The latest November sales data shows the company has broken its sales history with a 22 percent increase over the same month’s sales last November (a total of 20,792 vehicles sold).

"We have a formula that works," says Subaru of America senior vice president Timothy M. Colbeck. "Our vehicles are right-sized, come with all-wheel drive standard, and are known for safety, reliability, fuel economy and spirited driving. Add into that mix excellent value for money and it's clear why we are seeing sustained demand for our brand."

In addition, November saw records broken for the 2010 Legacy sedan, 2010 Outback and 2010 Forester, while the Subaru Impreza line saw a 33 percent jump in sales.

The compas is based on the godawful Dodge Caliber. You aslo don't get a trail rated model unless you go top spec. 'Nuff said.

The other thing is that you'll get significantly higher resale with the Subaru, on top of better reliability.

Not according to Fiat. It will be replaced with a small Fiat-designed SUV in late 2012.

The 2011 Jeep Compass continues to provide an economical option for the budget-conscious Jeep customer. To further attract potential buyers, the Compass offers excellent fuel economy that compares well to compact cars. If you’re looking for a four-wheel drive vehicle that will see primarily on-road use, the 2011 Jeep Compass deserves your attention. While it may not compare to the other Jeep models’ rugged off-road capabilities, the 2011 Jeep Compass will give you the Jeep look and a fun ride around town.

On The Road

The best feature of the 2011 Compass is not its styling or interior features, but rather the care and attention that has been paid to how it handles on the road. The continuously variable transmission provides much needed kick and verve to the Compass, allowing it to effortlessly tackle difficult terrain in all sorts of weather, from snow-covered mountain roads to watery stream beds. While the Jeep has never been noted for its exceptional acceleration, the sheer amount of power available at lower crawling speeds separates it from any other recreational vehicle in its class, or indeed, among automobiles in general.
Jeep’s consistent performance in this area has earned it a reputation among drivers, and this latest manifestation of the Compass does not disappoint. The vehicle has also been equipped with Hill Descent Control, which is wonderful for sudden drops or other unexpected road conditions. Essentially, for a rugged outdoor weekend, the precision and control of the engine and power train will enable any driver to fully enjoy his surroundings.

Competition to the 2011 Jeep Compass

The Jeep Compass rides much like a car for a good reason. Underneath the Jeep Compass body, this vehicle is based on the Dodge Caliber design to provide car-like handling with a higher ground clearance. One of the few Jeep vehicles that offer a fully independent suspension, the 2011 Compass provides a smooth on-road ride and fun handling characteristics.

I'm aware that the reviews are relatively positive, but I'd be most concerned about the resale value and reliability.

Hense the longer warranty, I'm only trying to be unbiased toward both vehicles right now. I honestly like them both. Comparing them by numbers and main features is extremely close, 4 door, 4cly, awd, good MPG, and so on.

The makeover is just to keep it going for two more years. The Fiat based model will still replace it in late 2012.

Quote:
Jeep is trying to reposition the Compass as a slightly more premium vehicle in the compact crossover segment. It is also separating it from the Patriot, which shares the same platform, engine and options, and was similarly priced. While the refreshed Patriot keeps its $15,995 starting price (minus destination charges), the starting price of the Compass is $4,000 higher, and goes to around $26,000 for the top-end Limited.

The Patriot also received new front and rear fascias, along with upgraded interior materials, switchgear and steering wheel, and suspension revisions to increase ride height. The Wrangler gets an all-new interior with improved road-noise suppression, new steering wheel controls, standard electronic stability and hill-start-assist, and larger rear windows.

Where To From Here?

In 2013, Chrysler will launch full replacements for the Compass and Patriot -- one new vehicle to replace them both, a ground-up replacement for the Liberty, and a small Jeep priced below the Compass replacement, but still offering all-wheel-drive and off-roading capability. All three will be based on Fiat engineering platforms, which Allen says are "completely up to the task."

The Compass is total crap. It is far too underpowered imo... Go with the Forester... she won't be disappointed!

Tell her to get the Subaru because Chysler/Dodge are worthless POS's that don't hold their value and are prone to failure.

NOT the Compass. I haven't driven the new one but if it's not completely redesigned (which it's not ) then there was just too much inherently wrong with it to make enough of an improvement.

Has she driven both of them??? This should be one of her largest points in purchase: which one she actually likes driving more.

The '11 compass isn't in yet, she drove the forester and likes it, however the warranty will allow her to keep the vehicle longer, her Impreza just ran over 36000, thats why she's getting rid of it.

The jeep compases are ****ing jokes. When I worked for a dodge chrysler dealer, I used to absolutely despise going for a test drive in them.

How many issues has Subaru had? They have failures all the time. You can't target the entire company because all companies have weak sides.

Edit: If you were in the market for a truck what dealership would you go to first, i bet a dodge dealership. Cummins turbo diesel's are unbeatable.

It sounds like you and her both want the Compass for some reason. /thread

Since she trades out of vehicles once they are out of warranty, you should probably look and see what an 07 Compass with 60k is worth vs. a 07 Forester with 60k. Check it out:
www.kbb.com
www.edmunds.com
www.nadaguides.com

Has she driven both? That is what it should come down to, not what some Subaru fanboys have to say. Any (non-mopar) car enthusiast is going to say the Caliber/Compass/Patriot sucks, because, well, it does.

One thing you need to also consider is, you're mom trades her vehicles in, she doesn't keep them until they blow up in a fiery death I'm assuming, since she's trading in her 3 year old Impreza for a 2011.

With that being said, the residual value on a Forester is SIGNIFICANTLY more than a Compass.

.

Incorrect sir.

You CANNOT, which is an ongoing misconception, hold the Subaru line up for their failures for the idiots that mod them.

If you look at the *NA* subaru failures they are virtually nothing that is due to manufactuer fault.

Subaru has a label that alot of their cars have problems, they don't. Their owners have problems.

Like I said double check the reliability with the NA models and residuals and you'll see its WAY higher than the Compass or anything in Jeeps line-up short of the Wrangler.

I think you should do some of your own research on resale value, maintenance/repairs (reliability) and lastly, owner satisfaction.

It then all boils down to what your mom wants and not what this forum is telling you or recommending. More options in a car that's just sitting at the dealer for repairs is useless to me (goes for either vehicle).

Then choose the vehicle (wisely)! Good luck!
