Angry reading spark plugs, dealer gave me only two.

I had my '09 impreza outback sport in for a tuneup at 50K at a dealer in VT.

I asked to see the spark plugs.

They gave me only two with no real explanation why.
Those two looked ok.

I wasn't in the mood to argue with them and it was running ok anyway.

What problems could I be missing by not seeing the other spark plugs.

What if anything do you think I should do?

are you having issues? Spark plugs aren't the divining rod some might believe, they are only a small piece of a very large puzzle when a car is having problems.

If you aren't having issues, who cares? seeing the plugs will do nothing for you. Chances are they chucked them straight into the trash, and when you wanted to see them, some poor SOB had to go digging through it and only managed to find 2 of them. (not necessarily yours.)

You probably aren't missing anything, other than you might have gotten ripped off as stated. Maybe they didn't change your plugs at all. FYI, I went about 100k miles on the original spark plugs with no issues at all. And the plugs looked fine when they were removed!

seeing the plugs wouldn't confirm or deny anything regarding his being changed. if they wanted to rip him off, they could have EASILY found whatever plugs were within reach and shown him those. The fact they only found two makes me think they probably are honest and just couldn't find them after tossing them.

That's exactly what happened, happens every other day at my store.

OP, did u ask them to save your old parts before they did the repair?

If not, they brought you what they could find. And honestly weren't going to dig through chewing tobacco spit, lunch from 3days ago, and all the other nasty stuff in the techs trash can to find the others.

Even if they were ok, u asked them to b replaced didn't you?

They performed the job you requested them to do?

Techs in my shop aren't allowed to keep old parts, they have to be thrown away that day.

This is how I verify that the 'widget' the tech told u you needed was in fact what u needed, and went on your car. Not in his toolbox or friend/families car.

I asked for the old parts, as most states give you the right to do, before they did the work. Seeing the plugs to see if they show any signs of uneven wear, etc is my right. The question is what types of problems can the plugs identify?

Is this what you are looking for?
http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/engine/plugs.html

Ok now for more of the story.

Did you bring your vehicle in for a complaint, drive-ability issue, or CEL?
If so what was the concern?
What did they find?
What did they recommend?
Was it all done?

Now, if there was no concerns, complaints, etc, what kind of service did you ask to be done?

What most likely happened is the Service Advisor forgot to tell the tech, or write on the repair order to save the old parts and they forgot. Technicians do not save parts unless they are to be returned to the parts dept for warranty purposes. They are thrown out. So they went digging through oil, dip/spit, trash, the old cheeseburger that was not finished, the half a can of soda that was not finished to find your plugs and only found two. They probably did not want to dump out a 55 gallon size ****can for 2 more plugs.

Why does everyone feel the need to "have to do something". All these people are always trying to show people up, prove something, or get something for free. When I change plugs I throw them right into the trash where the guy next to me blows snot rockets and spits in it all day long. If you asked me to grab the plugs just because you wanted to see them then I'd tell you to go f' yourself and if you wanna dig through that you can. Either that or I'll just walk around the shop and collect 4 spark plugs from someone who has some and show you. Again you'd still accomplish nothing. So what is the point again?

I'll help you out. Here is what your plugs looked like most likely.
