Uppipe welding

I found my uppipe weld cracked today, and was wondering if these are possible to re-weld to fix it? I am having a problem finding another NON V-Band EWG setup uppipe, and need it running pretty soon.

If it is re-weldable, what do I need to specify when finding a local place to weld it?

of course it's weldable. Any "welder" will be able to seal that up for you.

Any welding shop with a decent tig welder should be able to do it. However, it will crack again. This is not due to faulty welding. It is due to faulty engineering of the original part. Most up pipes are made from 304SS. The temperature that this part is exposed to is way beyond the temperature that 304 is supposed to be used at. The welds always crack first. It is called intergranular corrosion cracking. Basically at this temperature the chromium precipitates out of the metal, the weld rusts, and small thin cracks are formed which expand.

Due to the fact that the repair welds will be contaminated, they will be weaker and more prone to cracking. It is very hard, almost impossible, to clean the area to be welded properly. Soot and carbon from the exhaust is the major problem. Even if the inside and outside of the pipe are cleaned very well, the crack itself still contains a lot of contamination that will weaken the weld.

Thanks guys, I found a new one by Ultimate Racing. Should be here tomorrow. Got the old one off today and I dont think I will even try to repair as a spare, it was not pretty.
