Default WRX Owners: Anyone replace their transmission at the dealership?

MY02 WRX is at the dealer as we speak. Per the techs, 2nd gear went out and jammed the other gears...explaining why i couldn't get my car out of reverse. I was told that my current tranny is not worth rebuilding, due to the other gears being damaged from 2nd gear failure, and was suggested to get a new one. Approximate cost of the new transmission installed, and with the initial charge of dropping the transmission to diagnose the issue, is $5200

Other than suspension and cosmetics, my car has an uppipe, downpipe, high-flow cat, axle-back, BOV, and is Cobb-tuned....HP is ~230 and TQ is ~245. I have 57xxx miles on the car. The original clutch was replaced with an OEM Exedy clutch at 44K miles.

Other than the dealer, I have one other reputable shop to consult.

If you or anyone you know have had the dealer do this work, how much was paid? I need my car back ASAP and have to make a decision by monday morning.

Thank you in advance for any feedback

You can go to any 3rd party that specializes in Subaru's and pay half that for parts and labor!

The trans itself used should run around $700-$1500 give or take.. Even professionally rebuilt ones can be found for slightly more than that that price.

Labor should be less than $500 as a typical clutch job which has to have the trans removed is $400 at my local shop.

The dealer is where you go if you have money to burn or free warranty service.

I agree....sucks you're in that situation, but don't you dare give them $5,200 for a rebuilt stock transmission.

LOTS of options, i'll even help you out.

super cheap:

Just gears:

6speed upgrade for $3200 (and its an '04, so that's a bonus....no swapping hubs/brakes)

$1500 for RA gears:

Now just get some buddies to help you install it yourself and you're golden.

thanks for the input all!

i have a few shops and friends looking locally for a tranny for me. it's just a race against time for me. i wish i had all the time in the world to look and research, but i need my car back asap due to work and school.

i can't stomach paying the dealer that much for a new tranny. i just need this car to last me another 2-3 years.

i'll keep you all updated. THANKS again!

Go national with your tranny search. Shouldn't cost more than $200 to ship one cross country on a pallet. There are lots of good used trannies out there.

It also helps us help you if you fill out your profile with some sort of location. There are lots of resources out there we can direct you towards if we know what part of the country you are in.

I'd rather go a third party shop who knows Subarus. Dealerships charges way too damn much...
