Default Phase I EJ22 into a Phase II Car?

I am looking at buying a 99 impreza with a blown motor. I know the MY99 imprezas have a phase 2 ej22. Would it be possible to drop a phase I long block into the phase II car? I know I would need a new exhaust manifold because the 99 ej22 has single port heads and the earlier ej22's have dual port heads. The part I am worried about is the intake manifold. Is the phase I and phase II intake manifold compatible?

You can do it but you haveto keep the phase I intake manifold and swap the sensors from the phase II engine onto the phase I engine. I have actually done the swap you're talking about and it runs fine.

Im sorry my post wasnt very clear, but yes you can do it with swapping like mentioned above. Most people want plug and play though, and it would be far from that. PhilSine- could you comment on how much work it was to do? Any customizing? Ive never heard from someone who actually has done it.

It was minimal work. I only swapped the newer sensors onto the older block, swapped on the newer PS pump/bracket, alternator and bracket, and AC w/bracket (same bracket as alternator). I had a dual port exhaust on hand and simply got the correct gaskets for it as the dual port exhaist exits the same as the single port one so it mated right up to the rest of the exhaust.

Nothing else had to be done. Since both engines are SOHC, the ECU was none the wiser.
