Oh, some clarification: I have two rallies coming up (Resaca, July 19 and Maine Forest, Aug 1) and the physical swap will happen after those. The wiring harness conversion is what is underway currently.

I would assume you haven't dropped in the motor for test fitting yet. I'm just curiuos as to the room in the front and near the fire wall. What tranny are you going to use? Which ECU are you going with, or do you have different managment?

The big question is is there room for a turbo?

Good luck and I hope it works out!

Incorrect. The motor has been in a
same-year Impreza and out again. It
bolts up to the existing tranny and fits
on the stock mounting points.

Firewall doesn't change. Fan cages at the front need to be cut up a bit.

Quote:

For the moment, 5MT. Till it breaks.
Then I'll be importing some gears from Austrailia.

Quote:

Stock H6 computer.

Irrelevant to me... putting a turbo in
would mean a restrictor since I'm
running in SCCA Open class. And that's
a whole 'nutha mess I don't need to
deal with.

Definitely keep us posted. I've heard rumors of people doing this, but I've never seen it actually documented.

Then you've heard more than I have.

hmm intersting ...
are you going to do any head/cams/internals work
i would wager that there is a sizable amount of power to be gained from an aftermarket ECU compaired to a stock

why not just go with a eg33? They are cheaper, more powerfull, and bullet proof proven(all of them are getting swiped up for air plane conversions.) I would deff look into this, willl bolt up to any 5mt trust me there is one on ebay for 355 right now

Longer, heavier.

Don't need more power than a 3.0 at this
point. How many trannies do you want
me to break??? Actual rally is not a
ultimate theoretical horsepower quest,
it's just more torque than your
competitors have. And even with that,
there's the issue of choosing at what
level you want to compete.

However, I'd enjoy a ride in your car
after you finish your 3.3 conversion.
(Yes, I see that you're currently _IN_
a 3.3, but it's your 3.3 Impreza back
burner project that I'm interested in.)

I put a couple pictures up:

Have you talked to Zimmer to see what issues he had when he tried it? I don't know if they were insurmountable or he just ran out of time and went back to the 2.5 and has just never tried it again.

Yup, he's a friend of mine.

He ran out of time. Mechanically, only
small, minor problems. Electrical / wiring
was the issue there. Which is why I'm
not in a super rush, just a-workin' on the
wiring harness and diagrams from the
factory manuals...

I see you're also prepping a Sube of
similar vintage. What's your plan and
how is it coming along?

Cheers,
Anders

Default Reflash?

I am wondering if the H6 ECU can be reflashed using the same programs as the WRX? That might be a nice way to go to relibably and get a bit more umph. But over all I find the project very intresting. Have you already worked out the suspension and such to acommidate the change in weight?

cobb is working on access and it does work with the ez30. Im going to see if i can get that ecu to work with my car, although it seems doubtfull. I think you are thinking of someone else about the impreza thing, i just have an SVX with a 5spd conversion. Good luck with your project

Mechanically it's all done (except for 'minor' details, radiator fitment, hood scoop, strut tower brace) and it's at rallispec now having the wiring done. Should be ready for Maine. I originally wanted a winter project and didn't want to have to rush it in 2 months between STPR and Maine but once I found a wreck I didn't want the donor car setting around for months so this is what I got.

You've probably seen these thread already, but you mentioned you've never read the rumors firsthand:

Anyways, this gets my vote for most interesting (and practical) swap! I'm waiting with lots o anticipation!

This question is a long shot but I'm going to ask this anyways. Some of us guys that own Subaru XT6s have were thinking of a conversion like this for a long time but the SVX engine is said to be to long.

I don't know how extensive your background is on older subarus but would you happen to know if the 3.0H6 would be able to fit in an XT6? The XT6 already has a 2.7ltr H6 so...... What are the dimesions of the 3.0ltr H6 engine? Thanks!

Hmm I checked this lump out at STPR when I helped Randy for a few. Looks like fun.

Going to get me to co-drive this one for you when its all done, Anders? I'm game.

Ed Wahl

P.S. For the person that asked "who is "amy" shes cute?"

Just imagine giving the rally winners a peck on the cheek.
It was nice. I think Zimmer tried to get seconds as I recall.

Amy has been the trophy girl at several rallies: Cherokee Trails FIA, Sandblast, Rapidan. Your next chance to see her is probably Cherokee Trails this fall, assuming all goes according to plan. So, enter, win, and get the smooch!

Ed:
Who know? With ClubRally all wacky-go-nutty right now, it's hard to make any plans, ya know? Don't worry though, you're on the list.

re:Zimmer's Seconds
You see, that's where years of racing experience shine through. Only many trips to the podium teaches that kind of skill. All the young whippersnappers around here would do well to emulate his style... with the ladies! *grin*

Dang, somebody beat me to it! I originally bought a svx just to swap the engine into my legacy. Lost interest when i found out i had to remount the radiator and lift the engine to change some plugs!
Anyway, good luck with the swap. I wish i could find a wrecked outback with this engine. If i could i would probably drop all my current plans of putting the wrx engine in.

Question

Some of the XT6 guys were asking about
the dimensions of the engine, so I went
out to the garage just now and did that.

I put them on the web page so they
won't be lost:

The car had it's first race about 10 days ago with the 1.8L. Compared to my previous runs on the same stages in a different vehicle, 10% faster with 27% LESS horsepower. ("only" 20% less horsepower when corrected for weight)

Anyway, I have to take the car up to Tenn to check the accuracy of the Cherokee Trails rally route (for the organizers) this weekend. That will still be with the 1.8L.

On Tuesday I'll be pulling the 1.8 and then phase 2 begins.

Anders

Oh, here's a pic from the rally:
