Default car won't start!

Just came back from Costco this afternoon and the car (2004 Impreza TS)
won't start. The battery is fine and have lots of power, the starter turns fine, but i suspect there is no fuel getting to the engine. The fuel pump was not priming before cranking. After 30 + mins of trying in -17 oC temperature, we heard this familiar sound of the fuel pump priming, and started the car successfully!
What could have gone wrong/defective? Fuel pump relay?
I need to sort this out ASAP. This is my wife's car and I need to assure her that everything is in working order.
Any suggestions?
BTW this is the first time this car has ever failed us. Owned it since new.
Thanks in advanced.

maybe there was a little bit of water in the pump. After a while of trying to get it to go, it warmed up.

and the connections to the fuel pump itself. Look for loose and/or corroded connections.

well since one other member got bitched at for "cross posting" i figured id use this one because it's the original "car wont start" Well..Car wont start. It was turning over slowly. I threw the cables on it. cranked it over. it turned over fast how ever, it's blowing out the intake and also fires sporadically. I know it's not the fuel pump because i'm smelling raw fuel and i can hear it. Though my exhaust smells like ****. i like to run 93 in my car. it's winter and i dont want to risk ****ty fuel. so i buy 93. well for the one time i did put regular in it..it doesnt start!!!

OP: Could be clogged fuel filter (ever changed it?), or traces of ice in the fuel system. What maintenance have you done on it?

Prezarevo: 93 fuel is useless for your engine IMHO, 87 isnt by any means "****ty". The questions does remain about maintenance though. In your case it would seem the problems are more alongside the sparks/coil pack

Blowing out of the intake though?

Glad you found the problem... but why did it jump? Old and streched, bad tension?

I honestly do not know why it jumped. its not due for replacement yet. I have one theory why. Maybe the cold had somthing to do with with the tensioner giving a little?
