The EJ18 headgaskets are just fine, you really don't have much to worry about there. I would bring a mechanic friend with you, or take it to a mechanic before you buy it. If you don't know much about cars this is your best option to make sure that you don't get screwed over.

haha i know cars pretty well just not this car kinda thing. lol i plan on doing a compression test and such just not sure about the cold start thing.I have a 2004 wrx im building now since my motor blew so i have a pretty decent knowledge of the ej205 motors through research and tear downs but not sure how similar these older motors are to the new turbo cousins. Also im looking at droping 600 bucks on the car haha so i know ill need to do a little work but i have a weekend to get it running cuz ill lose my current car on monday so the faster i can fix things and not have to diag the motor the happier ill be!

EJ25s are the only known EJ to have noteable HG failures. Cold start problems could be caused by a faulty coolant temp sensor, it is pretty common for these to go bad at some point. You can test it before you get a new on, and even at that the new part is only $20.

The coolant temp sensor is a thermosistor that sends a certain resistance to the ECU which tells it how to adjust the fuel according to the temperature of the coolant. Obviously during a cold start, the engine must use more fuel to get it going, if there isn't adequate fuel, it won't start.

How to test it:
Remove your coolant temp sensor. Use something to plug up the threads or else you will spill coolant everywhere. There are 2 prongs on it, with your multimeter, measure the resistance between the two prongs. As the temperature DECREASES, the resistance should INCREASE. I'm not sure on the exact numbers at certain temps.

It's a cheap part. Replace it, if it works then you just fixed your car for $20. If it doesn't work, oh well, whats 20 bucks.

Ahh thats too bad...

I'm sure you can find another 1st gen for cheap somewhere else. My first legacy wagon was $180 and the one I drive today was only $800. Both were FWD with the 2.2. I've yet to own a 4WD or AWD Subaru
