Default Latest project : FX-R Bi-Xenon retrofit into 04-05 wrx

Did this for a buddy's peanut eye. Literally just finished a few hours ago, and it kicked my ass for weeks. Don't recommend this projector/headlight combo for anyone NOT familiar with doing retro's.

Lemme know what you guys think! Owner of the lights is on another local scoob forum but not sure if he lurks here much.

setup is the FX-R with Morimoto 35w 4.3k bulbs + E55R shrouds.

Yeah they kicked my ass squeezing those damn big ass projectors into such a small reflector lol. Was all worth it though, buddy just finished installing them and LOVES them. I'll try and get him to take some installed pics soon.

I am just about to buy the exact same kit. Im assuming you got it from the retrofitsource.com? Except Im gonna do the e46 extended shrouds. What exactly was so hard about it? I understand you have to move a lot of material to fit the projector in but I guess I dont see why its any harder. Have any in process pics?

yeah all the components are from TRS.

The shape of the FXR is really funky compared to the much easier to install TSX. Blobeye headlights have a fairly small reflector and not a whole lot of space to work with behind the driverside light (clearance for battery). A good amount of reflector needs to be cut and the projector itself needs to be modifed alot too. The FXR will sit really far forward in order to clear the battery making it pretty tedious removing the right amount of material. Measure twice cut once is the biggest advice I can give ya.

Couldn't be happier with how they came out! Just need to raise up the cutoff and it will be perfect. I will try to get some pictures of them on the car tomorrow. Anyone looking to get there headlights worked on I highly recommend him, he knows his stuff, emails/PM's back within hours and is dedicated to his work.

Thanks again!

^^ They look sick man. I really wanted the big fx projectors but everything I read says in hindsight they would have done a smaller projector. So I may just end up buying the Morimoto Mini's. Any imput on them duey?

MH1's are a great choice IMO. Not the *best* projector but a great performing one and requires much much much less work compared to FXR/TSX etc.

To give you a general idea here's a quick mockup I did awhile ago

Forgive my ongoing hijack of the thread, but that is a quick mock up of the mini correct? I like it

I realize it may lack a little in performance, but since this is my first retro I feel I may be over my head with the fx. I am down for a little challenge but I think I will play it safe this time. Thanks for your help. This is perfect timing, I was thinking about ordering the fx kit earlier tonight.

Why did you think the blob eye were so hard?? I just finished mine earlier this week with the morimoto mini bi-xenon and the Apollo shrouds, only thing that was a pain was getting them mounted straight so that nothing angled to the side. These projectors were easy to mount and also have a threaded bulb mount which made things nice. I had to cut the bottom of the shrouds to fit other then that they fill up the whole housing and people have told me they look stock.

Yep that last pic posted is with a mini h1 in a sti reflector (wrx h1 will mount the same way).

You'll be happy with the mh1, sure the fxr is better but IMO for this application the mh1 goes in so easily and only performs slightly below the fxr that requires much more work. For the average guy the difference in lighting between the two is negligible when you factor in the amount of work involved.

My original post is a retro with the fxr not mh1. Which is a big difference in size and the way they are mounted.

Looks good! I love my TSX retrofit in my 05. May I ask how you sealed the back of the headlight? and maybe get some pics?

I have been contemplating a quad retrofit in my car , mainly waiting for the s2k-R's to come out.

I originally wanted to do a completely sealed rear but with the little amount of room and due to time constraints (of my own fault) I couldn't go that route. Instead I reused the rubber boot from a bugeye and modified that to fit. It extends enough to cover most of the d2s connector. Maybe WDPballer can post up some pics of it when the weather is less raw out since I forgot to take pics from that side.

Great job on shoehorning those FXRs into that headlight! I'm thinking of trying M H1s in a quad setup in an '04-'05 headlight.

yeah they do look much better on the car compared to them off the car.

It might be a bit too much for some but seeing them on an SRR color like that makes me wonder how it would look with a "time attack" style pinstripe on the shroud.

Hey, I know this is a 2 month old thread but Im in the process of doing my tsx retrofit. Could you shed some light on how you mounted the projectors to the reflector? Im having issues with clearance when using screws as they are hitting the back of the bowl in the light housing.

Btw I am using tsx projectors. Thanks!

Looks great duey!

From what i heard so far ' the ds2 minis fit right into the 08-2011 wrx's basically screw in.
But i have heard of some poeple having the low\high shield get stuck.

Low beam only projectors that I love are the rx330's !! they are cheap too.
