Default Alfa to launch new '4C' coupe

Quote:
Alfa will preview a new styling direction at the Geneva motor show with the launch of small, high-performance, coupe concept.
Tipped for a limited production run of around 5000 cars per year, the new car is described as a ‘baby 8C’ by insiders and is expected to cost more than £35,000.

The mid-engined concept - rumoured to be badged 4C - is not intended as a spiritual replacement for the classic Alfa Romeo Spider, instead placing greater emphasis on outright performance and intended to give the ailing Alfa brand a huge image boost when it arrives in the US in less than two year’s time.

Alfa is not alone is aiming for the ‘Audi TT effect’, where a single model can transform wider perceptions of the brand.

Alfa insiders have told Autocar that rumours that the car is based on a development of the KTM X-Bow’s carbonfibre chassis are “wide of the mark”. Industry reports suggest that the 4C will be built around a carbonfibre monocoque, allied to aluminium subframes front and rear. Engineers are aiming for a particularly low all-up weight.

It’s thought that the concept is also related to the proposed Abarth roadster, uncovered by Autocar last autumn. However, as well as greater use of expensive lightweight materials, the Alfa is likely to have a more powerful engine, more seductive styling and more lavishly appointed interior than the less expensive Abarth concept.

The Alfa’s transversely mounted powertrain will be lifted from the Giulietta and is expected to feature highly-tuned versions of the acclaimed MultiAir engine line-up.

In the longer term, Alfa Romeo is expected to launch a direct replacement for the classic Spider, a model which is felt to be particularly important in relaunching the brand in USA. It’s possible that Alfa will work on a conventional steel monocoque rear-drive platform for the car with partners Chrysler, which already makes the rear-drive 300C.

Fiat sources told Autocar that $1bn was invested in re-engineering the platform underpinning the new 300C and the platform underpinning the front-drive 200C. Both cars make their European debut at next month’s Geneva show wearing Lancia badges. The 200C will not make it to the UK, but the 300C will arrive early next year.

Alfa's been rumored to be coming back to the US every year in this century so far. As their countrymen would say, "Basta!"

A lineup consisting of the MiTo and the 159 would have worked fine for a US launch. Only old people remember the Spyder, and only because Dustan Hoffman trashed one in The Graduate...

Every 8C that I've seen has been privately owned or available for purchase.

I think his point is that the 8c has about the same commonness as a Bugatti Veyron. He wants to see an Alfa showroom, with cars on a lot, purchasable with just cash (near sticker) and not connections.

There have been 3 8C's in my area for sale recently, all around the 175K mark. Beautiful cars no doubt, but tough to justify price/performance. Would be great to add to an already full stable, but I'm not in that league lol.

Concept above looks hot.

What area?

I have seen a couple (maybe the same one?) rolling in the Tiburon/Belvedere neighborhood. I think the folks willing to shell out that kind of coin for a car are less concerned with price/performance and more concerned about having something more unique than the ubiquitous Porsche.

I am kind of looking forward to this car...

Take this car:

Add a dash of these two...

Offer it both as a coupe and convertible... Multi-air turbo 4, manual or automated-clutch gearbox choice as a RWD transaxle design... engine between the front axle and firewall, transaxle behind the driver, in the rear axle. that would be pretty slick.

(even better if they would license the Subaru FB engine and add multi-air tech to that... considering Subaru's DOHC boxer 4 format is pretty darn close to Alfa's old DOHC boxer 4... they could adapt and upgrade a subaru manual for 2WD, like the previous longitudinal FWD Subarus used to be... but applied to the rear axle instead, like a Porsche 928/924/944/968, or a C5/C6 Corvette, and the 8C Competizione already is... I kind of wish Subaru and Fiat/Alfa were partners, rather than Toyota. Fiat is actually helping Chrysler come back... and Marchionne is actually pretty good as a car guy at the head of an automaker.)

I'm in Atherton, but SF Sports Cars in San Carlos (former Mgr from Ferrari SF in Mill Valley) had a one-off Gray one, as well as a Pearl White one for sale, and BMC in SF had a Red one as well. I haven't seen one on the road though - rare indeed.

the 8C is a beautiful car and definately has a spot in my Lottery Garage. For similar money, I would definately buy an 8C over a F430 in a heartbeat. The 8C is not as fast but fast enough and is one of the most beautiful cars on the road today, and much more rare.

I am on that bandwagon max. I think the 8c is just shy of automotive pornography. Its numbers are meaningless compared to how beautiful it is. It does what a car should do. It stirs the soul even before you turn the key. I really love the 8C

Alfa Romeo has already confirmed that it will debut a concept version of the 4C GTA at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Alfa Romeo 4C GTA is expected to be the brand’s new rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive halo coupe and will help attract more customers to the brand.

The Alfa Romeo 4C GTA will use an innovative construction method with the structure provided by Italy’s Dallara Automobili, one of the world’s largest producers of racecars. The structure combines carbon fiber and aluminum, allowing the 4C GTA to have a curb weight of 1,784 lbs.

Power for the Alfa Romeo 4C GTA will come from a 1.8L 4-cylinder direct-injected turbocharged engine making more than 250-hp. That will allow the 4C GTA to have an impressive power-to-weight ratio of below 3.5kg/hp.
Production of the Alfa Romeo 4C GTA is expected to start at the end of 2012 in on of Fiat’s factories in Italy. The company plans on building 20,000 to 25,000 units over five years. Prices will start around 40,000 euros ($55,000 USD). Fiat sources said that the Alfa Romeo 4C GTA could come to the United States, but no decision has been made as of yet.

Default 4c Gta

the due ottanta is a stunning concept car:

hopefully the production version of the 4C is identical to the above "concept"

---------

Crazy that the 4C is rumored to be developed with help from Dallara & based off the KTM X-Bow !

--------

If it actually is priced for the masses, i will be doing cart wheels!

and then there is this:

I'll be the odd one out and say I'm not really digging that concept. Pontiac Solstice rear and over the top concepty front end. This is impressive, though:

Alfa Romeo says the production version of the 4C rear-wheel-drive coupe will be a sold around the world, including the United States.

The halo car "will bring us back into markets such as the United States, where we are not present today," Alfa CEO Harald Wester said Tuesday, adding that the 4C will go into production in late 2012.

The automaker plans to build 15,000 to 20,000 units of the 4C coupe over five years, two people familiar with the matter told Automotive News Europe. Another 5,000 to 10,000 units of a roadster version of the 4C will be built for Abarth, the sources said. Abarth is Fiat's sporty sub-brand that markets high-performance versions of the Fiat 500 minicar and Punto Evo subcompact.

Fiat's struggling Alfa brand is set to price the production 4C at about 45,000 euros (about $62,000) in Europe, company sources say.

Alfa enthusiasts have dreamed for almost two decades of the return of an affordable rear-drive model after the Duetto Spider was discontinued in 1994.

Alfa's 8C Competizione, which was built from 2007-2008, was too expensive for most Alfa buyers. The spider version of the 8C cost up to 213,000 euros and the car's production run was limited to 1,000 units. The 157.5-inch-long, 200-hp mid-engine 4C concept took design cues from the legendary 33 Stradale, company sources say. Launched in 1967, the 33 Stradale was a rear-engine, rear-drive two-seat coupe powered by a 230-hp 2.0-liter V8 derived from Alfa's 33 race car. Alfa built just 18 units of the 33 Stradale.

The 4C concept was styled by the Fiat Group subsidiary's design center in Turin. The car is rakish, very compact and extremely low to the ground.

The 4C will go on sale at a crucial time for Alfa because by the final quarter of 2012 the company also plans to introduce the Giulia mid-sized sedan to replace the slow-selling 159 and launch the brand's first ever SUV, a sister model to the Jeep Compass/Patriot replacement.

Fiat S.p.A. CEO Sergio Marchionne wants to lift Alfa sales to 500,000 units by 2014. Alfa's global sales last year increased a modest 10.2 percent to 112,000 units.

Thanks to an innovative construction method, which combines carbon fiber and aluminum, the 4C will weigh less than 850kg (1,784 pounds).
