First off, sorry for it only being an Airboy! Dyno time out here is ridiculously expensive, even for only a power check. Last time I was quoted 45,000 yen ($550 USD) for Dynapack setup and only 3 pulls with A/F


Data for the spreadsheet was extrapolated from my Link logs at .1 sec increments. I datalog at 50hz (.02 sec) to keep an eye on knock events but 320 data points doesn't seem to jive too well with Airboy. It looks like 60 points (every .1 sec) works well.

Car feels strong for only 16.5 psi! Pulls from 97 -153 km (60-95 mph) in 3.28 sec from 4th gear. I'll be tuning for higher boost soon; just waiting for a BSP to NPT adapter to get here from McMaster Carr so I can hook the water/meth back up. There is obviously some work left to be done.

Timing tapers off up top. I pulled some timing out due to some false knock triggering caused by a flaky crank sensor. Logs are below, any input appreciated!

It's "base gas", which is rated at the pump as 93 R+M/2 (same as US). It's currently $3.03 a gallon. Japanese hai-oku (100 Ron) is about $7 usd a gallon.

Meth is cheaper

Good numbers on the low boost. However I think your tune is VERY conservative. You run 18 degr. of timing through peak torque and hardly increase timing towards the topend. I think more can be had there.

I think you can run more boost on AKI ((R+M)/2)) 93 Octane but I would definitely go richer on the AFRs. I have seen too many failures at 11.6 ~ 11.8 AFR full bore pumpgas tunes. They make lots of power but usually results in melted pistons down the road. Better to give up a few BHP for more safety. Are you watching EGTs?

Gotta love Stand Alone SD systems They are very nice to tune and have awesome logging capabilities. After getting spoiled with all the nice features you wish that was the first mod you bought

OP you have a very nice set up. I'm still puzzle as to how you can run that much timing and not see any knock on 93 octane. It's probably dude to the low boost and the turbo working at a high efficiency but i think once you raise the boost on pump your timing has to be lowered a good amount. This car hits peak torque at almost 5000 rpm and you are running 19* of timing which is way too much unless you are running better fuel or meth and your AFR is in the mid 11's. I suggest you do a pull from lower RPM between 2000 and 2500 rpm all the way to readline to compare.

Just remember that this engine is running enlarged chambers on the EJ207 heads AND is running large duration cams which lowers dynamic compression even more. TBH, ignition advance figures are not that meaningful and are really dependant on the setup. Some engines make very good power on low advance figures (11~12s peak TQ and 15~16s Peak HP) and some engines are just more "Timing hungry" requiring 18s through peak TQ and upto 28s Peak HP.

OP, what is the static compression of this engine?

I agree that each setup is different and that some can run more or less timing than others but he is using a USDM shortblock so the only major difference from most USDM Sti is the EJ207 heads machined to 99.5mm. We know they are better than USDM Sti heads and we know that most USDM Stis running 93 octane run very similar timing profile with similar size turbo. I think the heads are making a huge difference or the low boost is the reason he can run that much timing.

Thanks for the input guys. Just saw this thread again, been kinda "busy" over here in Japan. The car is still running well although I still haven't got the meth hooked up. The meth fitting came in but I've been busy with other things.

The timing curve was lifted from my previous EJ207 tune and tweeked while monitoring knock via detcans & Link's built in knock logic with a Bosch Motorsports KS-P knock sensor. I'm also running Cossie pistons. A few folks who have tuned engines with Cossie pistons have noted they could get away with a little more advance over the standard slugs. Can't state if that's fact, just relaying my logs here. Tune has been richened up a tad throughout the top end.

IIRC, static compression was calculated ~8.7:1 after cc'ing the heads.

add a little more fuel up top, I would start at 4k rpm and start bringing your timing down to around 13-15 @ 5k rpm then start adding from there to redline and look for around 22-24 degrees (little bit at a time) at the top
