Default FormulaCross -- low cost rallyX prototype

Searched but didn't see this, so I thought I'd start a thread.

http://formula-cross.myshopify.com/

It's basically a project to create a mini, low-cost rallycross car with a 450 ATV powertrain. Here's a video of Rhys having fun with it:

I've been wishing someone would come up with a karting equivalent for rallying and this looks like it could be it -- if it takes off.

Seems like it could be a lot of fun. Can't tell if it's just the powertrain swapped into a custom frame/shell/body or if there's more reused from the original bike.

I think we all would, but this will probably be 1/4 the cost to run, if not less.

I'm skeptical on how much power it would make though... I ride a CRF450R, and for a dirt bike, it has more than too much power. Im just wondering how throwing on 3-400 extra pounds and some drivetrain loss would affect it. Could definitely be fun though, video makes it look that way at least.

There's to be a 700 model, too.

Looks fun, but what is the estimated cost looking like? Doesn't actually look "cheap"

Looks like Legends concept for rallyx. The quoted weight is 1/7th of an STi so doesn't need much power.

Nothing quoted yet, but the cost of a new ATV is about $6,500. I'd guesstimate somewhere in the $15k+ range.

Compared to what? Here is a used rallyx car for $45K. Plus, the cost of new engines, suspension, etc is probably far less.

So are what type of Rallycross are we talking about here with this thing? Traditional SCCA dirt time trial around a cone course or euro / GRC type rallycross? Because in the video I saw cones and dirt and not door to door action. If we are talking about the 1st version, 15K is a joke. You can pick up a very good used car for that sort of coin. Hell, you can pick up a competitive car for 1/2 that an many times much less.

If we are talking about door to door Euro / GRC type Rallycross, then yes I could see how this might work. This thing could never handle big jumps tho.

Given it's Rhys Millen piloting that thing, who is competing professionally in the new US rallycross series, I think you can draw your own conclusions there.

^^ Please, Rhys (and 99.99% of the population) would put their name on something to make a buck regardless of how it's used.

You may feel free to keep pre-emptively hating on something that doesn't exist yet, but check out his facebook page. It's clear he's quite closely involved in the development of this thing.

Not really hating, just wondering what it's being used for. I don't do the facebook thing so I don't know how involved he is. I only know what was in your original post and what was in the video.

Could this sort of thing work and be used as a "feeder" series into GRC or ERC? Sure! Short course series (all the many iterations) have all sorts of classes and under Pro 2 and Pro 4.

I will say though, the Pikes Peak car he and his team developed a few years ago was not that great and borderline failure IMO. So just because Rhys is involved in something does not mean it's gold.

This is true, there's no telling on just how well this thing will drive, or how well it will be received, but yes, the idea is for this to be a feeder for rally driving.

Here's the description on the site

Quote:
With countless feeder series already in place to support the likes of Indy Car, Formula 1 and NASCAR, it only made sense that Formula Cross fill in the missing gaps in the world of rally and rally cross. With some of the biggest names in the sport of rally cross such as Sebastian Lobe, Marcus Grönholm, Tanner Foust, Ken Block, Brian Degan and Rhys Millen, Formula Cross is the perfect building block to develop driver skills and perfect car control. All at a price point untouchable by other similar manufactures. Weather you have a passion for Motorsport competition or you are just the weekend warrior, Formula Cross will provide the adrenaline rush of excitement you crave. Designed to accommodate a driver up to 6'-6", Formula Cross is the perfect answer for those that are often left to sit and watch.

Your guess is as good as mine at this point. I'm hoping the former, but the latter is probably more realistic.
