Default 2011 Hyundai Elantra Coupe coming this spring

Quote:
According to the latest reports from Automotive News, it appears that Hyundai will launch two new or redesigned models by January 2012. Hyundai confirmed the dealers attending the brandís make meeting today that it will launch a two-doorcoupe version of the 2011 Elantra, set to go on sale this spring. Moreover, the redesigned Azera large sedan will also go on sale next year, in January. Dave Zuchowski, Hyundaiís U.S. sales boss confirmed the fact that the 2012 Azera will be powered by an all-new 3.3-liter, gasoline, direct-injection V6 engine delivering about 260 horsepowe.

This engine will be more fuel-efficient than current Azera. Hyundai expects to sell around 20,000 Azera units a year in the United States, a major leap from the carís current volume. For those who donít know, Hyundai sold only 3,051 Azeras last year, announcing a drop of 20 percent from 2009.
Regarding the 2011 Elantra Coupe, this model is expected to use the same engine as the sedan, which means that we will find the all-new 1.8-liter Nu four-cylinder engine with 148 horsepower and 131 lb-ft of torque capable to deliver around 40 mpg. [via autonews - sub. required]

Who, ME?

I thought the Veloster was already the Elantra coupe-ish 3-side-door, hatch-into-the-roof thing.

Is Hyundai going to have 3 coupes directly in the brand?

I heartily endorse them doing this.

Is the driveshaft going to pass through the crankshaft or the oil pan!?

More coupes = more win.

Wha? Are we talking about hyundais here? They are FWD transverse, other than the longitudinal RWD on the Genesis pair and Equus.

Why can't Subaru, or some of the Subaru enthusiasts around here, be convinced of that?

Given how sleek and awesome Hyundai's recent styling has been, I think I would see this as a more fitting replacement for the Tiburon than the Veloster. I'd honestly be thrilled if they made a sport compact version (even if it's more SER or Si than WRX or MS3). Don't imagine they will, given the Genesis Coupe, but it would be cool.

Default Hyundai Elantra Coupe To Debut at 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show

Quote:
Just the Facts:
  • Hyundai will unveil its new Elantra coupe this fall at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.
  • The standard Elantra coupe engine will be the same 148-horsepower motor that powers the sedan.
  • Hyundai is also likely to create an Elantra R-Spec in 2012, using the same 208-hp turbocharged engine already confirmed for the turbocharged Veloster.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. ó In a deft move intended to strike the heart of Honda Civic sales, Hyundai will unveil its future Elantra coupe late this fall at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Expect powertrains in the new Elantra coupe to come straight from the sedan. All 2011 Elantra sedans are powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder generating 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque.

Hyundai is also likely to create an Elantra R-Spec in 2012. That coupe would be powered by the same 208-hp turbocharged engine already confirmed for a high-performance version of the Hyundai Veloster. The standard Veloster offers an optional dual-clutch automatic transmission for its normally aspirated 1.6-liter engine, so the six-speed DCT could find its way into the Elantra R-Spec as well. More importantly, it would give the turbocharged Elantra an option not offered by Honda's popular Civic Si.

Hyundai is quite proud of the Elantra's sedan's 29 city/40 highway mpg, taking great pains to point out that those fuel-economy numbers apply to all Elantras regardless of transmission, trim level and wheel size. We'd expect those high ratings to continue in the 1.8-liter coupe model.

The Elantra sedan is offered in two trim levels: GLS and Limited. As with powertrain offerings, coupe equipment is likely to mirror the sedan.

Inside Line says: If you need more proof that Hyundai is on the road to becoming the new Honda, it'll be at the L.A. auto show this fall. ó Kelly Toepke, News Editor

Plenty of Acura RSX in that greenhouse. Look out, Honda -- Hyundai's got your number.

Looks nice, but I'm more interested in the Veloster.

Seriously. Hyundai just keeps up awesomeness........I see so many of the new Elantras on the road in my area it is crazy. This turbo or the new 2012 Honda Si = pretty damn easy choice. Go Hyundai.

For all of the good Hyundai and Kia have done with car styling the rear wheel area still usually looks horrid

These cars don't look quite as good in person as they do in images like this, but I'd still take one over the new Civic. I accidentally mistook the new Civic for an 03 Camry the other day from a distance... my wife's comment: "Well, that's not good."

A friend of mine in Korea drove the Veloster recently, and he thought the steering was crap. Let's hope that the US version gets a significantly different tuning on the electric steering.

I'm with you. Aside from the Veloster they have the Genesis Coupe, Tiburon, plus the Kia Forte Coupe. Small sporty cars aren't that popular to stuff the segment with offerings. I don't think this will sell well.

Why bother, look at the ratio of coupes bought versus their sedan counterparts, how many Altima coupes sold versus the eleventy-billion sedans out there, 2 maybe 3?

There aren't that many people out there buying coupes these days folks.

i read some reviews somewhere. the elantra sedan's steering is crap too. so i'd imagine this won't be different. disappointing really since everything else about the car is pretty nice.

There aren't many decent affordable coupes to buy. Very few look good, and fewer drive good.

The Altima coup is a fat ho, just like the soon to be gone Eclipse. They mostly sell to 30 something chicks who want to feel sporty with two doors. I rode in my coworkers Eclipse and it felt like a stiffer Ford Explorer.

I love 2dr coupes and wouldn't touch any of the 2 door coupes in the 15-30K market except for the Genesis, Mustang, MX-5, and Forte (I'm probably missing one here).

Dollars to donuts that gets "fixed" prior to the North American launch.
