I was thinking the same thing. The Cruze is a pretty handsome car for it's segment.

Ok, so this is a side-shot of the 2012 Impreza, which as stated, looks like the current Legacy.

But, does this represent all lines of Impreza model? Meaning, will the STI also be included in this same body-style or will the STI be a separate and distinct line? Just a thought.

This looks useless for motorsports, and therefore useless to me.

Bring back the Brighton!

same footprint as the current car.

How is the footprint compared to the brighton?

How is the mass of this car, base trim, vs mass of the last impreza in comparable trim?

Honestly, I think Subaru is trying to kill off the Impreza as we know it. Just slap a Legacy badge on it and call it a day. I mean, that IS what it has evolved into.

Are you asking if they're going to make the WRX a separate car like they did with the Supra and GTR? If they did I think some news would of been announced already, that's heavy stuff.

I think it is a nice improvement over the current gen. It's a mix of Mazda 3, Cruze, and Legacy. Still not sure if I like the massive wheel arches but it gives the car some much needed character. Subaru is really trying to be competitive in a competitive market while boosting mpg and maintaining AWD (assumed).

It wouldn't be any different from every other manufacturer.

The current civic is the old accord so out comes the fit.
The current corolla is the old camry so out comes the yaris.
The current focus is the old Taurus so out comes the fiesta.
The current mazda 3 is the old 6 so out comes the 2.

The new impreza looks to be about like an old legacy, so out comes the 2500lb subaru coupe?

Arise from your grave... the 2005-2009 Legacy has been revived and born again into the 2012 Impreza.

True. If the title said Kia, or Hyundai, or pretty much any other manufacturer, it wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

The only thing vaguely Subaru I can see is the wheel arches.

That is exactly what I am hoping for. I love my BP and I would love to replace it with something about the same size, around the same power, but better mpg. And if Subaru doesn't build it I'll get a Focus ST or something else...

We are going to see more of that funny front window design due to the focus on improved aerodynamics to gain mpg. Not a fan but it is what it is.

This has been going on for years, even with Subaru (see 1st gen legacy vs GD Impreza)
The current Altima is the old Maxima so out comes the Sentry
3 series is new new 5 series so out comes the 1 series

the list goes on...

This car looks good so far... looking forward to seeing the rest of it.

Was any other non-WRX/STI Impreza (non-Outback) anything other than a car for the masses?

It looks exactly like the Impreza concept except that is has obviously been engineered to be mass produced and not a static floor model that doesn't need to meet various world government regulations, and doesn't need to be the least bit aerodynamic, or doesn't need to comply with the known laws of physics.

This happens everytime any car has been redesigned... "It looks like XY and Z! WTF were they thinking!?" I for one think it looks more like a Ford Fusion than the last generation of Legacy.

Makes sense. Other nondescript Toyota econoboxes, such as the Yaris and Prius, have them.

I am in a similar position though I have an 09 Spec B and absolutely love it thus far...I have no interest in the current model however am looking forward to the 2012 models. If I can pick up a 2012 STI that is similar in size to my current car with slightly more power and equal or better MPG I am in!

That definitely is a Base Impreza. Personally not a big fan although compared to the current 2.5i, I suppose it's better. There is something about the nose I don't like. Looks very nose heavy/bulky up front for some reason...

Not sure why this "new" Impreza is news worthy at all...my Kia Forte gets 37mpg, IIHS top safety pick, has better standard equipment, has a bigger engine with more power, handles better and costs less...

Interesting note though, a little birdy at my dealer just told me that the WRX & STI will stick with the current body & drivetrain for at least a year (through 2012)...

Only because of the vents, scoop, big fogs, and wing. The basic body was super generic (and 8 years old by 2001!)
