Don't know if this really affects pre-orders, but this article was written yesterday (Nov. 7):

I ordered just a few days after Subaru opened up the pre-order. I was first to pre-order at my dealership. The most uptodate info I received from the dealer was last week, when the sales manager said to expect it in first 1/2 of December but it could potentially arrive by end of Nov. No official update from SOA regarding VIN/date of arrival. And this is from me ordering back in August. It is what it is, and probably has to do with how the allocation is being shipped via truck/train from the port of entry into the rest of the country. No other explanation from what I can tell.

This Impreza has plenty of add ons to it:bug deflector/hood protector, front under spoiler, body side moldings, strakes on the rocker panel, window rain guards, rear bumper molding, roof spoiler, and the sport grill. Oh and also the windshield sun screen and bars for the roof rails I wonder how much more the car is with all the add ons!!

I think I am going to wait for aftermarket but will eventually like to go with bug deflector, window rain guards and mud flaps. That should round things out.

I have never used a bug deflector on any of my cars before. Anyone able to speak to its usefulness?

I ordered my PZEV Limited on September 19th. Got the email with the VIN, stating it would be at the dealership by December 6th (I hope that's a conservative estimate!)

They are basing this all on Subaru saying "Coming in December" on a blog post written on 10/21. As of 10 days after that post, all the dealers I spoke to were told end of November. I guess we'll see!

I got to test drive a premium cvt 5 door tonight in Oklahoma city. Verdict: solid car, did not blow me away with comfort, quiet, tech, or performance. However, I didn't go expecting to be blown away in any of the above categories. I am considering the 2012 impreza in lieu of my WRX in an attempt to be more frugal in life.

I found the cabin comfortable but not as comfortable as the outback that was in the showroom. The highway ride was as expected. Noticeable wind noise and cvt noise under acceleration but nothing intrusive. Conversation between me and salesman didn't come close to requiring raised voices and seemed notably quieter than my WRX (i will bring a sound level meter next time to compare).

I found the acceleration to be adequate. Unlike in the WRX where you don't really have time to look at the speedo on an onramp, I had plenty of time to consider my next move. That being said, I found myself at 80 quickly enough and didn't notice an abnormally harsh engine noise. At highway speeds the cvt responded quickly to throttle input and scooted the car along nicely. I enjoyed playing with the paddle shifters, they were surprisingly responsive. From previous experience, they also serve an actual purpose on steep hill descent, where the cvt in auto will let you.coast surprisingly fast....

Handling was also quite responsive with comfortable and non-butt-puckering body roll. I took a corner fast enough to induce some mild drift and never felt scared or like the car was anywhere near rolling, although I did momentarily wonder if I was going to use the other curb as a bumper.

Sound system in the model with nav was decent, much better than in the WRX. Didn't sample audio in non-nav model.

I think the dark gray metallic 5 door with the alloy wheel package looked very good in person. I will try to post my cell phone pic tomorrow.

Avg mpg from last few test drives was 24.9, salesman said it was 32 after drive up from Dallas. So if you pound it all day, you probably won't get more than 25. I will look forward to actual mpg reports.

While driving this car, it reminded me of the saying "its more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow." I think this car has the components to be a slow car one can enjoy driving quickly.

In summary, if I decide on saving $200+ per month, I think I would be very satisfied with this car. The combination of utility, comfort, quiet, and fun (not fast) would result in a wholesome car ownership experience, in my opinion.

- Brandon

P.s. I realize that I didn't say anything other reviewers haven't said, but I figured I would add to the library of commentary.

Edit here's the picture:

Question is what will it average driving reasonably as a DD. I would hope it would be close to the EPA numbers.

Are you the first to post getting a VIN on a non-Sport model?

It all depends upon how you drive. I would venture to guess that most people taking a car on a test drive may drive a little differently once they take the car home. Some may not, of course those are the ones you want to avoid when they want to sell you a used car!

My 2008 Elantra was rated 24/33 with an estimated combined MPG of 27. My overall average combined MPG over the last three years is 32.78 -- it was lower during the initial engine break-in but then continually crept upwards (so you could expect your MPG's to improve after the first year of driving if your driving style remains the same).

I am betting that I will average at least 30mpg with the Impreza 5 speed, and may do better.

That is very very disheartening.... I was hoping that the EPA conservative estimate of 36mpg was accurate. Generally with those estimates you can get +/- several MPGs. My 11 WRX stage one going 60MPH gets 30-31 MPG If all this hype only gets 32 then I am going to be very sad. I was actually looking into getting one of these for the wife if the gas mileage is that good.

I may be mistaken here, but I do not think that the quoted 36 mpg is an EPA estimate. Isn't it Subaru's estimate? Would the EPA have had a chance yet to test the new vehcile yet?

I wouldn't look too much into that unless you know the exact details like fuel used, city vs highway, weather conditions, spirited vs moderate driving...Hell, even the car being a demo could be different from the final production model. I've been pretty accustomed to getting higher than what the stickers say on cars for both city and highway. Like you, i'm currently driving a more spirited car except it's a GTI, and i get 30+ on the highway vs the advertised 27.

Yes, 36 is the official EPA highway estimate for the CVT. Supposedly, manufacturers themselves measure fuel economy per EPA procedures. EPA may do spot-checking.
