That's weird. I asked SleepNmky and he said he heard nothing when he did the same. I hope it isn't normal as I need a solution to my noise problem.

When I slam it down I hear a bit of resonance in the tunnel area. It's an expected sound coming from a metal framed car. You hear the ssame noise when driving?

just got back from a 400 mile trip up to NH and back (from RI) and the car displayed I was getting 34ish mpg, this is with the crossbars on and a second person in the car with the rear of the car packed full (including some beer from Harpoon!) Must say, I don't know how C&D managed to get 22mpg in their test car. Seems a little odd...

I have quite a few items in my console area so maybe that's deadening the sound itself. Is yours empty & echoing?

Because like they say in most of their "reviews" they drive like maniacs.

We have over 2000 miles (non-PZEV CLF w/snow tires) and with temps averaging in the 20's we see roughly 20mpg in mostly city driving with short trips. This is about the same as we get with our 2005 Outback under the same conditions (which weighs roughly 10% more than the Impreza).

On the bright side we just returned from a 1000 mile road trip and saw about 35mpg with average speed about 65 and temps in the high 30's.

From what I have seen so far, I believe that the EPA city mileage is optimistic if you drive short trips in cold conditions. However the EPA highway mileage seems to be pretty realistic with speeds less than 70.

Oh, no!!! A '98 rescuing a '12?? So the braking and traction control engineers negated a major AWD benefit? To me, that's the most serious complaint here.

Please, please let us know what happens "next time".

This is a common 2012 2.0i problem.

Question: have you left the key on (maybe listening to stereo, maybe during engine warm-up) while refueling. The fuel gauge not updating for me coincided with those occurrences.

It seems a lot of the problems with this car are a result of rushed/incompletely-tested ECU programming.

I don't need a slam and I hear it already. Just closing it makes an echo. I can't hear the noise when driving as the road noise overpowers it. Maybe they will compare it to other vehicles and if they also make the noise, they will pass it off as normal. I really hope it isn't normal though.

I've tried it out both empty and full. When full, I have leather gloves, sunglasses, a charger, auxiliary input wire and gum in the console area. I also have a water bottle in the cup holders. It is filled with items and I can still hear it and don't need to struggle to replicate it.

I can't say that I've paid attention to where I left the key. I think I leave it in the accessory position as I still need to roll the windows up/down since Jersey doesn't let us pump our own gas. Why doesn't the car "update" itself on the next restart then? When it doesn't read full, it just hangs on that level until I use that amount of gas.

Really, having the display flash each 60 minutes of elapsed trip time is too "nanny-governed"? You seem overly sensitive.

We have a Legacy loaner car now. My father drove it home from work and said it was much quieter than the Impreza; he didn't need to touch the radio volume from when he was driving 25 MPH to when he was doing 80 MPH on the highway. I also tested the center console noise. On a normal to firm close, I heard nothing. When I became aggressive, I heard the same noise, but at a faint level. On my Impreza, the noise was amplified even when on a normal close.

I will see what they do tomorrow. The dealer acknowledged my complaints so I hope there is a fix.

I'm not negating your comments on the noise there may be a problem where it is causing excessive noise, just FYI, the Legacy is usually regarded as a more luxurious vehicle with more sound deadening material for a quieter ride. That said, I hope they are able to check out your car to ensure that the sounds you're hearing are not normal. Should be relatively easy since they probably have other cars on the lot they can use as a comparison. Good luck and let us know how you fare.

She often hangs out near the rear diff to put those fancy patterns on her press-on nails.

Yea, I've been getting so many contradicting responses on sound levels. I've had some say that the new Impreza is quieter than their previous Legacy, their previous Legacy being quieter and even the last generation Impreza not being much louder than their Lexus.

At least the dealer didn't hand it back today saying they didn't find anything wrong.

What's up everybody! I'm new to the club. Last Tuesday I bought a 2012 Impreza Sport Limited in black, which is hard to find if you didn't pre-order. It was actually a dealer trade from Charleston, SC. I owned a used '92 Legacy back in the mid 90's and really liked it. I only kept it 3 years because I was overseas and sold it before coming back to the east coast. It's been almost a week and I'm very satisfied with it so far.

I traded in my (also black) early production 2009 Honda Civic EX (50k mi) that has the potential of developing a crack in the engine block. Even though Honda extened the warranty to 8 years, I travel often and not knowing when or if the engine was going to fail was bugging the crap out of me. I'd spell anti-freeze every once in a while but no leak. The last whiff happened about 2 weeks ago and that was the last straw. It was time for a change and this fit the bill. A little more room, A LOT more features but the most important thing was it had the same MPG (36 hwy). Also, my Honda had the same slight delay as this does before going into drive or reverse. Interesting....

I heard this noise the other day in my garage too. It stopped after a few minutes but I didn't know what the hell it was.

I was thinking that as well. These Yokohamas do look like they'll only last about a minute. There's not much height on the tread.

Are the factory splash guards for the 2012 functional and worth the price? I'm wanting the protection from dirt, salt, and other grime, but don't like the look of mudflaps (way too aggressive and bombastic for my taste).

I think they will protect your car from a decent amount of stuff that gets kicked up. For less than 80 bux online, you can't go wrong from the cost perspective. These come in a set of four and are PAINTED.

If you want something more functional, you can always wait for RallyArmor to make a set for the car. Not sure if you like the look though. I believe JamesWilson2 has put on a set of RallyArmor universal flaps. I have had them on my '05 and '08 STI and I can attest that they are very functional.

Does anyone have an idea as to when that will be? Their website just says "coming soon" for the basic ones.

I took delivery without the splash guards & quite a bit of mud splash ensued. For the same reason too, I didn't want anything intrusive in look. But I couldn't deal with the mud/salt splash. I added the OEM splash guards, they match your car color & are very low profile. Check out the pix thread, the first post is my car with the splash guards installed.
