I posted in the fuel efficiency thread that ours was a quart low at just over 3000 miles (maybe 3300-3400?). Not what I expect on a new car... I guess I should contact SOA so there is a more clear record of reports. Maybe this is why my dealer recommended the first OC at 3,000 instead of the owners manual suggestion of 7500???

Yeah, that was news to me as well. Seems like a pretty fool proof system! Of course I also got the "Industry standard is...". 1qt per 1200 miles would mean that you could essential deplete your entire 5.3qt oil reserve in 6360 miles ( I've yet to go beyond 5k per cycle) and still be in tolerance. I know that's the high end of "normal" tolerances but it's laughable to think that anyone could say that's normal!

That's news to me. If the dipstick were to ever be off, I would think it would have to be low (maybe if you read it while the car is running and oil is being sucked out of the pan?), never high, but that's a guess.

what the?! that's definitely a new one...

very odd comment. so they added 1.5 qts: what did that bring the dipstick mark to?

i'm a bit skeptical of this although i know there is some variation depending on when you measure. as STeye recommended. measure after the car has been sitting for a few minutes...

I origanlly thought that the oil level sensor was malfunctioning from the way it was acting Saturday. I was just going to take it in this morning and have them look at it. They detirmined that it was in fact low. I was at mile 4600 of my normal 5000 mile cycle. I just had them change the oil and note the issue. The oil light wasn't on when I started it. So I drove straight to work.

ok. keep us posted on any subsequent lights and issues. i'm guessing (if they were being honest and true -- sorry if i'm skeptical of dealers) they measured what came out of your car. but that requires an extra step for them because most shops have that big "funnel pan" that they will use on multiple cars.

i too would guess something is up with the oil sensor if the dip stick was reading a consistent midpoint.

i've been keeping an eagle eye on my dipstick after a mere 850 miles, i'm still at the same "high mark" that it started at...but time will tell. i'll change at around 2k anyway for my first interval.

Yeah, I'm going to watch this cycle like a hawk. The only reason I called SOA was so that something was already in the system. This may never come up again but I wanted someone other than just the dealer involved JIC.

hey guys,

for those of you who are doing the oil change on your own? can you confirm what gasket/washer you used?

i see on ebay, somerset is selling one with the part number 803916010 and i would appreciate a second confirmation before ordering that with some filters.

thanks!

I got them at the dealer with the OEM filters (sold separately, of course) but I am not using them because I installed a Fumoto valve with the washer it came with.

If you are going to do your own changes, consider getting the valve. My first change was a bit messy because you can almost never pull out the drain plug and not make a mess -- with the fumoto and a tube no fuss, no muss from here on out.

i always make a mess of some sort [worst so far is my wife's prius which i'm sure could also benefit from a fumoto should i take the plunge in that direction]

i'm still thinking about the Fumoto valve after all of the endorsements you and others have made. but for now, i'll stick with my tried and true messy method until i can convince myself to do take on that new approach for this old dog...

running mine actually 33/31 (1 over spec on front and rear)

my old honda civic was also 32/30. i'm guessing it's to account for more weight over the front wheels.

I've had a Fumoto valves on my last two cars and absolutely love them. Could you please provide us with the part number of the valve that fits the 2012 Impreza?

Yes I did. It appears to be a real soft copy of the manual, not a scanned in copy (I can't believe someone scans all those pages!).

I just checked the pressures in my Sport last night after reading a suggestion from someone here on NASIOC. I was shocked tio find that all 4 tires were at 45 psi I set them back to 35/33; I am going to run like that for a while and adjust if needed.
If you have a new Imp and have not checked your tire pressures yet, I might suggest giving that a look! I assume that the dealership missed this during prep. Good idea to check all of your fluids too...

you should get it if you are doing your own oil changes. i had one on my honda s2000 and i could do the oil changes without lifting the car. definitely saved alot of time and mess. im not going to get one because my dealer is going to do mine for the next 20k miles. i'll be sure to try to milk it.

I think many of those sellers just download them off the web and sell it on ebay.

I test-drove a DGM 2012 Impreza 5-door to replace the 2012 Impreza that is being repurchased by Subaru of America. This car had 43 miles on it. When we started it up (salesman and I), the main airbag malfunction light came on. We drove for a few miles, then stopped and restarted the car (key cycle) at a traffic light. The airbag light went out for 3 miles, then came back on again. I was going to sign on this car today; looks like I am NOT!!

PS this is not the center display Passenger airbag/seatbelt warning light, but the main instrument cluster Malfunction indicator. I took a picture for posterity.

it seems more common than expected or that dealer had a batch of bad eggs.
