Here's some pictures of black painted headlights on a 2012 a guy did along with a HID retrofit:

Fuzzykittens, you're awesome. Thank you. I was waiting to see someone else do it before I bit the bullet, and that's just what I needed.

Default DRL Disabling

Has anyone successfully disabled the DRL on the 2012 Impreza?

but if my feet don't fit on the pedals, it is difficult to drive maybe it is something i will adjust too. time will tell. I won't have the car until next saturday at the earliest.

Zeeper,
I was looking at the Amsoil stuff again, it is GL-5, which is fine for differentials, etc, but does it seem to work well in the trans. too? I seem to remember you changed that out too. I thought GL-5 wasn't good for transmission synchros?

EDIT: nevermind the GL-5 thing, the service manual says it is GL-5. our VW is GL-4 only

It falls into the category of: why would you disable a proven safety feature?

It also proves you never search, because this was discussed already, and the other person (who wanted to save his headlight bulb life) was pretty much dismissed.

How much shorter can you get? On the test drive I felt like I was gonna break the shifter since it was already do short to what I'm used to.

I put a perrin short shifter adapter from my old bugeye and it fits right in. I don't know the exact length in shortness I got but it shortens it up nicely enough.

Here's a shot of the shifter after I got the boot off.

Np, I've been considering it also. Post some pictures if you decide to do it. I've never tried anything like that before, be great to hear how your project goes.

Is there a functional reason to go with a short shifter in the 2.0i -- It isn't really a performance car so it is more style over substance?

Please don't read this as sarcastic, I honestly want to know if you think it is worth it from a functional standpoint -- I'm not adding anything to the car just to be envied.

I am curious as well. I don't have my car yet, but I prefer a little longer throw. Maybe because my arms are longer than most?

i'm tempted to just put in a WRX short shifter, i think it is the cheapest option and not the shortest either. haven't decided yet, need to drive the car again, 5 more days i hope!

Exactly.. Short throw shifter reduces the amount of travel the shifter requires to change gear. Anyone with a physics background will realize that this also increases the force required to shift gears.. but IMO its not a bad compromise. With the short throw you won't have to slam the shifter around to change gears quickly.. In fact I find that if you do try to slam the gears with the short throw you end up grinding because the synchros aren't ready yet. As an aside note, I installed the kart boy bushings and then removed them because they act to work against the natural motion of the shift linkage and transmission.. With them installed I was hearing thud noises anytime I hit a bump or driveway because the shift linkage couldn't move freely with the transmission. They might work well with stiffened suspension, but my 2 cents is don't put the bushings on an otherwise stock vehicle.

Ive looked into the WRX short shifter and the assembly cost 238 ish? Kart boy short throw is 170's Where are you seeing it cheaper?

Im interested in installing the short throw and bushings but im going to wait a while before i make the order. Maybe there will be more reviews when im ready.

2012 Sport Premium

What is a good price to negotiate for the extended warranty on the Impreza Sport Premium?

Since I see no reason to shift faster in my car, especially if it puts more stress on the synchros, I'll not be following your lead. I don't slam my shifter around now anyway, so much for this upgrade.

I never realized my car even shifted slow until I read this description.

Now I did install a stiffer aftermarket linkage on the shift lever of my ZRX1100, that took out some slop and improved the shifting quite a lot...

not rev matching wears out synchros more than quicker shifts. If you rev match you can shift as quickly as you want

wishful thinking...

wouldn't it be nice if they did a firmware update for the 4.3 non-navi HU that allowed album art for the ipod interface? i didn't even think about that until my father in law mentioned it...now i wish i had that feature!

btw, Navi folks -- does the navi HU show album artwork?

i think I will for sure do the shifter bushings though. probably start there and see how I like it.

Different strokes for different folks. The short shifter doesn't damage synchros.. but driving style (ie 'slamming' gears) will. Subaru wouldn't sell their own short shifter if it was at all damaging to the vehicle. For my taste, the short shifter just makes driving easier. But in my opinion, the shifter bushings do nothing to improve shifting performance or 'crispness'. In my experience, all they did was provide a solid stop after each gear became engaged... all of the slop and play was still there and certain gears were even slightly harder to engage. My opinion is that the stiffer bushings limit the shifter's ability to move with the transmission to such an extent that it may cause damage to the linkage and could result in denial of warranty claims. Interestingly, Subaru does not offer stiffer aftermarket shifter bushings. Again, to each his own.
