interior space in the impreza is excellent. The 3 seems cramped (particularly the back seat). Not sure if that is a factor for you, but it is for some people.

Do you have an opinion on how the Nokian WR G2s compare to the Continental DWS tires? Both seem to be respected for their all-season capabilities.

Here's Tire Rack's customer reviews of the DWS:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....emeContact+DWS

Surprisingly, Tire Rack doesn't seem to carry Nokian tires. That's strange....

Nokian has a pretty limited distribution network, and in my area anyway, only the better specialty tire shops carry the brand -- I bought them at Grand Premier Tire (they have a website).

I haven't driven on the continentals, so I cannot compare them. The Continentals and the Blizzaks seem to be best when new, then as they wear they lose their snow traction rating. The Nokian WRG2 has a very deep asymetrical tread pattern, and siping, like a snow tire (except for the asymetrical part)

My issue with the Hyundai wasn't limited to the torque steer going up hills, it also sucked trying to get the thing moving at the expected snow berms at the end of every road. That is something AWD fixes fast.

Does anyone here have any serious opinions with regards to the real world performance of the Impreza vs. the Mazda 3?

my very unserious opinion is that you should not expect the Impreza to perform as well on MPG's, and you should not expect the Mazda 3 to perform as well in the snow.

didn't I already say that?

If I didn't live in the hill towns (I married into them, by the way, when I bought my car I was a city dweller) I would have kept my Hyundai, it was almost paid off.

AWD means higher fuel costs and increased cost of maintenance over the long term. Both Subaru and Mazda make great cars.

If you primary concern is safety, I'd pick Subaru. I think they are built tougher.
If your primary concern is AWD traction in snow, I'd pick Subaru.
If your primary concern is MPG's, get a Mazda

Otherwise, if none of this means anything to you, drive both and get the one you like the best or is the cheapest, or is available, or is the color you like.

I have the Consumer Reports web site open right now, showing a comparison between the Impreza and the Mazda3. Here are some notable points:
  • For Reliability, the Impreza gets "Much Above Average" (solid red circle), while the Mazda gets "Average" (white circle).
  • For Acceleration, both cars get "Average". The Impreza's 0 to 60 MPH time is 9.4 sec, and the Mazda's is 9.1 sec. I'm guessing the Impreza was tested with the CVT, which I know makes the car approximately 1 sec slower to 60 MPH. I know I can reach 60 MPH in less than 9 sec.
  • For Routine Handling, the Impreza gets "Above Average", while the Mazda gets "Much Above Average".
  • For Braking, the Impreza gets "Much Above Average", while the Mazda gets "Above Average".
  • Both cars get "Above Average" for Front Seat Comfort. However, the Impreza has a whopping 4.5 inches more rear seat leg room.
  • For Controls & Display, the Impreza gets "Much Above Average", while the Mazda gets "Above Average".
  • For Fuel Economy, the Impreza averaged 26 MPG during Consumer Reports' testing, while the Mazda averaged 32 MPG.
  • The Impreza weighs 130 lbs more, and has 1 inch more road clearance.

Hope that helps.

Has anyone ever had a problem with condensation inside of the windshield? We got rain here on Monday and it was pretty warm (about 60), and yesterday on my way home from work I noticed most of my windshield on the inside was covered in condensation:

It took a while for the defrost to clear up most of the windshield, but just thought it was weird because I've never had that happen to the inside of the windshield before. It was almost to the point where I'll need to keep a roll of paper towels in my car cause I couldn't see anything!

Nope, the car was fine when I drove to work yesterday morning, but it must have warmed up during the day, and when I got into my car after work that's what I saw.

Defroster helped a little bit but took a while to clear up my side. Today it was normal again. I almost think that there was so much moisture trapped inside my car from the rain on Monday that my car acted like a greenhouse and accumulated all that condensation

If it wasn't still raining help your car out and open a couple of windows for a minute or two

Well I did have my windows open for about 5 minutes on the way home, but that didnt help the condensation that was already there. I guess it would have helped before it formed, but I didn't know it would

Just had windows tinted and windows were foggin up like crazy for 3 days. BUT it was raining outside for those days and windshield would clear up with defrost pretty quickly. I just thought it could have been the moisture from the tint job and the fact i couldnt open the windows.

Otherwise no real issues with condensation.

It does actually, especially when its all put down on paper like that. Honestly they are both fantastic cars, but I think I'm going to get the impreza. Unless the dealer can convince me on the crosstrek (for bike rack hitch and rougher driving reasons). Thanks!

How much is the up-charge for a Crosstrek that's similarly configured (options wise) to an Impreza?

About 1.2k. The only downside to me are handling and mileage, but that said, I've beat up on the outback in the past and been pleased that it is not phased by such behavior. I'm not aware if the crosstrek is any more durable than the impreza in any significant way.

The fault with the Hyundai was the weight of the car, the FWD, and the lack of traction control. It wasn't a real issue until I moved into the hilltowns. For most people it would be passable, but still suck.

But if you want to buy the 2008 Hyundai Elantra I traded in and shoe it with the tire of your choice to prove your point, it is out there somewhere. Go for it.

We can wait until we get a good amount of unplowed snow, and I'll show you where to drive, and follow behind you in my Impreza, until I decide to pass you and go on my way.
I have the WRG2 on my STI. Good in the snow and you can run them all year round. They are expensive and loud though.

Is installation fairly easy? Mind sending me a link of the model you used?

Curt Class I Trailer Hitch 112860

takes less than an hour, you have to fish the bolts through then screw in. I had my friend do it for me since I have herniated disks.
I use the hitch with my kuat sherpa since its easy on easy off.

Alternate setup (only used when I want to embarrass jdm hondas)
another option is of course the cross bars (aero)which I also have,
add in rocky mounts tierod(blue), inno fairing ina 261 with long bolt kit
and you are set. Color coordinated to match my caad 10s or
the g/f snapse 105.

This should make their balls shrivel up
