It takes some extra time, and walking, to find such a spot. But I think it's worth it. No door dings yet.

I also don't tailgate, which reduces my chances of getting stone chips on my hood. I think I have one super-minor hood chip after 9500 miles of driving.

I know it's not always possible to park in a perfect spot, and it's not always possible to avoid driving too close to the car in front of you when driving in heavy traffic. But the more you do these things, the less damage you'll accumulate over time.

I had a huge scrape on my hood after only about 3k miles. Well luckily it buffed out but I got the hood deflector which fits over the exact spot where it occurred. Just so happens i like the way it looks too.

But i think most people on a car forum would agree with strategic parking practice. lol

Does anyone know how the passenger detector works? It's not by weight like in other cars I have used. I was driving by myself yesterday, and noticed my girlfriend left the seat heater on. I switched it off and reached over to feel how hot the seat was. Without putting any weight on it, I placed my palm on the seat. The alert telling the passenger to put on their seatbelt began ringing.

I noticed even my cell phone will set it off sometimes. I thought it was similar to those detectors in nursing homes to set alarms when people fall out of bed or chairs.. in any case the thing is creating a wrinkle in the seat and you can see where it is. Anyone notice that?

It uses a capacitive seat sensor instead of a weight pad. If you simply touch the seat in the right spot, it will think there is an occupant in the seat. There was a problem with my first '12 Impreza (since bought back by Subaru) and it was triggering an airbag malfunction (which then led Subaru to create a TSB for it).

I don't know why they changed the system, I feel the weight based system is more reliable and effective IMO.

I want to add a remote start to mine, the Subaru instructions seem simple enough (just a ton of warnings about ripping airbags) and once all of the physical parts from the kit are installed, my dealer would program the system for $50. Google showed kits for around $330-450 depending on how sketchy of a website you were willing to go with.

Block heater is theoretically a simple task, but you end up draining a ton of coolant so its a gigantic mess.

On the topic of the chime when seat is occupied sans seatbelt, I disabled the chime this weekend after I saw a post on nasioc, so good to only have to hear it chime 6 times then shut up.

Regarding the phone on the seat setting off the chime, that also has to with it being a capacitive sensor. On the ride home from the dealer, I set my Ipad on the seat and had it go off as well, I was a bit upset. Then I read (on here I believe) that it had to do with the type of sensor. Now I have a thick foam pad I set on there, and can place a phone or tablet no problem.

Do the block heater yourself. The part is over 100 no matter what. 2 hours of work if you are slow

Thanks. I saw that already but thought it could be wrong because I thought it couldn't be that low because of the brakes or something.

Haha, I do EXACTLY the same things you do, and have had the same results too! I don't mind the extra walking, especially if it means no door dings.

One thing to add- I try to avoid parking near any cart receptacles, but if they are around I park uphill from them.

Glad I'm not the only one who does these things- friends accuse me of being OCD about my car...

Don't you hate it when you do the "strategic parking" away from other cars, and just when you are about to get out or walk away, somebody just HAS to pull up and park next to you even though there are other empty stalls away from you? I just sigh every time I wash my cars and discover new dings added by the inconsiderate rectal apertures in parking lots everywhere.

Default 2012 Impreza Exhaust Sputtering/Puttering

Hi guys

As some may already know, i was recently involved in a rear end accident. I have not had the body shop take it in yet (suppose to take it tomorrow). Anyways, I started the car today just to warm it up and sit in it before they haul it away to get repaired.

While the car was on, I noticed a puttering/sputtering sound coming from the exhaust pipe and noticed it was sort of spitting out water on the ground and it would come out in sync with the puttering/sputtering sound.

Does anyone know what is wrong with it?? A visual inspection of the entire exhaust and cat doesnt seem to have been damaged from the accident (the bumper and part of the rear hatch door is bent and banged up); the exhaust pipe looks untouched (not bent or anything like that and viewing the cat doesnt look bent out of shape or anything (from what angle i could see looking under it).

I dont think its engine or anything in the front of the vehicle since I didnt run into anyone ahead of me during impact.

Any grease monkeys have an idea?? its a new car (sniffle sniffle) and I am upset.

I recorded a video and will try to upload it on youtube and link it so maybe someone can shine some light. If not I guess I'll have to tell the body shop the problem. Does anyone's accident-free impreza make the same sound? Can someone record a video of their stock exhaust for comparison please?

I never heard this until after my accident.

Thanks in advance. Sorry for the long post.

I'm sure you've figured it out by now... but for those who haven't seen it... this is what the rear view mirrors look like with the all weather package mirror defrosters. They clear up pretty quickly.

I have a chunk of ice stuck inside the bumper at the passenger side. My bumper now have a small crack because of that.

I have no idea how the water got in to make such a big block inside.

Interesting. If your second pic is supposed to show the crack, I can't see it.

Never mine.. I cracked the bumper myself. My little brother made a small bump of ice in front of his basement garage parking for his father Yaris hatchback. I went straight to it.

(The yaris is quite shorter & my was still on the sidewalk...)

The angle & scratch explain all.

Just had a really rough start this morning, barely felt like it was going to start, then it kicked in after about 1 second. Anyone else have trouble with rough starts in the am?

I had a rough start this morning. Occurence # 2 for me in the first 3,000 miles of ownership. Took a while cranking to get it to start.
