But you see my point, which is that for me (and other manual tranny enthusiasts), it doesn't matter how good the CVT is. The CVT (or any automatic tranny) removes the process we enjoy from the car. I have no doubt that Porsche's DSG/PDK tranny is one of the best examples of an automatic tranny on the planet. But I still wouldn't buy a 911 with the PDK tranny.
True, I loved my 5-speed as well, but I guess it was time for a change. With the wait time there was in ordering for the manual, it made sense to me to go with the CVT instead. To me I would have enjoyed the 5-speed on the WRX more, too

I dont like this feature. Very few times would i need to maintain or stop accelerating down a hill.

I have to either shift up with the paddleshifter or keep my foot on the gas when all i want to is coast down the hill.

I dont hate the feature, and ive become used to it, but ideally i would like the option to turn it off.

The only reason i chose cvt is because i commute everyday and sometimes in stop n go traffic so AT is easier, but i dont regret my decision.

I do look down on them actually. Hear me out here. If someone chooses not to drive a manual then whatever, that's fine. However, this attitude people have of not knowing how to drive one but still acting like they are decent drivers or don't need to know how is getting really unnerving. It's the same as ABS braking and stability/traction control. By themselves the technologies are very clever and increase the safety of driving our vehicles by a massive margin. Cars have also gotten much safer in collisions. However, the increase of things like mandated stability control in cars, ABS, and the like, has resulted in people who care less when they drive, pay less attention to the road, and generally understand how to manage a car when it gets hairy to a much lesser degree than in previous years. That's fine, but they are on the road with me, and can hit me. This is why I will never, ever be able to respect people who say they can't do something as a justifiable excuse. If you can't do something properly, go learn to do it or at least stay far away from my livelyhood. Rant over.

I'm glad you're happy with your choice. Everyone who pays hard-earned money for a new car should be happy with it.

Meh, I hear what you're saying, but I don't agree with it. Just because someone has a car with an auto tranny, and stability control, and ABS brakes, and whatever doesn't make him a bad driver. As long as they are alert, and drive according to the traffic/weather/road conditions, and aren't falling asleep, and aren't texting, and aren't drunk/stoned, then I'm happy to share the road with these drivers.

In fact, I'd rather share the road with these drivers than with someone who has a manual tranny car, knows how to control that car at the limits, but is driving too fast for the weather, or has one eye on his iPhone, and so on.

Just because you know how to control your machine at the limits doesn't mean you're necessarily driving safely and making wise decisions.

Well la de friggin da.

Actually, this is the first new automatic I've ever bought, and the only reason I got the automatic is because of the (alleged) better mpg.

If you don't like the feature of maintaining speed on a steep downhill while in cruise control, you can always tap off the cruise control - not to difficult...

Oh I completely agree with that. What I'm saying is that things like the perceived security stability control grants and the influx of automatics on the market has made people more likely to become overly comfortable with their surroundings and start playing with their iPhone, or what have you, while driving. That was my whole problem in the first place. Drivers don't pay attention very much to the road anymore, and in part its to do with newer technology, but it also has to do with how easy cars have become to drive. Of course the government could always mandate stricter driving instruction and testing, but they never will.

This engine braking feature has nothing to do with cruise control. It happens automatically. If you maintain even pressure on the gas pedal as you were previously it will happen. If you take your foot off the gas to "coast" down the hill, it will happen even more so. It's a safety feature, not a cruise control feature. I like it because when I ride down a steep hill behind someone who rides their brake the entire time, I don't need to down shift or brake myself. The CVT will keep me from accelerating all on its own. Turning cruise off will not stop this. Overriding this requires you to put it into manual mode, upshift to 6th if you'd like OR give it more gas to so the CVT reacts as it should when you accelerate.

I really wish we has a 6th gear though. It wouldve improved highway mileage greatly. Im only getting about 26-27 mpg at 80 mph

Yeah, I would have preferred that myself, but the 5-speed MT is fine.

I'll be curious to see if the 2014 WRX comes with a 6-speed MT. I'm sure the STI will, but I don't know about the WRX. I have the WRX on the edge of my radar screen as a fun car to buy someday, but that won't be for quite awhile. Or if Subaru sold the diesel Impreza here in the USA, that would get my attention too if it was more reliable than the VW TDI. I'd love an Impreza with more torque and 40 MPG.

The next car that's approaching the center of my radar screen is a CUV to replace my wife's 2003 Honda Odyssey. That will happen in 1-2 years, and the new Forester will be a top contender.

Seat of the pants observations are not the same as test data. Personally I don't notice the brakes as great or terrible, they work as well as anything else I have driven. If I were concerned about them I would upgrade the pads, which I will probably do anyway when the OEM pads wear out, and maybe toss some drilled rotors on them (for looks!).
Even though the wife's imp doesn't stop like the STi, i wouldn't say the brakes are deficient at all. The feel isn't great, but it stops well enough for a car that doesn't go that fast anyway.

Some people choose to buy an automatic tranny car because they drive in a lot of city traffic. I can tell you that I've never become annoyed by my manual tranny when I get stuck in city traffic, traffic jams, etc. The process of shifting never becomes burdensome for me.

It's just my opinion, but my answer to your question of "I wonder if, instead of giving us paddle shifters to pretend we have gears, they were used to allow the driver some control of how the CVT is 'shifting', if that would make them more interesting?" is "no".

It's not that I hate the CVT. It's not that I look down upon those who can't or choose not to drive a manual tranny car for whatever reason. It's simply that the process of driving a manual car is, for me, bliss.
I'm with you man. I want driving to be fun. Driving a stick is just fun. Not much is as satisfying as hitting a perfectly rev matched heel-toe downshift. It's engaging.

Unlike you however, i sometimes do find having a stick annoying during rush hour/stop-and-go/1 mph crawling. It's worth it though.

Well today I drove the Fabled BRZ. You know, that thing you heard whispers of when you were younger but is as rare and elusive as a bald eagle in Florida...Well let me tell you, they do in fact exist, and they are everything they are made out to be and then some. I've driven faster cars in the past...and it didn't matter. BRZ takes the cake. Honestly, it made me realize how good our little Imprezas are. No, you can't compare them at all, its another world, but after getting out of the masterpiece that the BRZ is and taking my Impreza home (with a freshly installed 19mm sway bar), I suddenly liked it a lot better than before. It's a happy little car really. The impreza would be truly novel with the BRZ transmission. My. God. Best transmission I've ever driven, bar none. I'm sure there are better, but the mechanical feel and short shifts were nothing short of incredible. I also test drove a legacy cvt...which made me appreciate both the other cars about ten times more. Just thought I'd share with you fellows.

I believe the BRZ is as good as you say it is. I couldn't justify it as an Impreza replacement for practical reasons. Also for variety's sake, as much I like the F-series boxer, I don't want two of any engine.

Today's commute was cold and rainy, highways were moving at 70+ MPH. Wound out the engine through some back roads. The car stayed planted, was fun to drive and returned 31.5 MPG by the end of the day.

If a tree fell on my car tomorrow, I'd replace it with a 2013 Impreza. There's really nothing comparable out there.

Are there many folks that have changed wheels on these yet? I have seen a couple.. Was originally thinking the 10-spoke 5x100 WRX/STI BBS's (17x7.5). Then found a couple more (18x8's). Was just wondering how 18's looked and what size you can run under here.. I had several wheels on my 11 Si, my Enkei's being 17x8's and my Volks were 18x7.5's.. I figure some matte black 18's in 8/8.5 would look great on my silver 2013 Sport with the full lip kit, tint, and lowered.. Having Moore do my axleback and put on the H&R springs next month..

At this price point I completely agree. And I plan on getting a BRZ as fun/weekend toy. I'm glad I don't have a weakness for luxury trappings.

Don't go any wider than 8 inches for wheels. My '11 WRX 17x8 wheels are about as far out as I would go before I wanted to start fabricating a body kit for this.

I personally think 18's are too big for this car. They just look kinda crazy in my opinion. Some folks like it, but I think the 17 is much more tasteful.

I love my sport limited. It's comfortable on 3+ hour drives, is great in the snow, has roof rails for my new thule rack and mountain bike tray, gets good gas mileage (for my situation) handles pretty decent, and fits 15"ASA's so snow tires are quote inexpensive. I like that I splurged to add on the sunroof and so far i have 4700 troublefree miles.

Got the new radio installed, not gonna lie, the sound quality is better than the standard premium unit, and even better with my amp and Polk speakers. Even the radio/tuner sounds better.
Can't figure out how to turn off EQ though, I did the procedure, but never saw the eq option just other stuff

Pictures later.

The CVT is perfectly fine for "normal" driving. It's smooth, and gives (at least I do) great mileage. Only had it for 3 weeks and have 1,000 miles on it. No initial issues in that time. 13 Sport Premium here. I absolutely love the amount of space in the wagon. Drove a buddies bugeye wagon and mine feels much larger - more like a Legacy. I'd say do it.

And how hard was that "Limited radio" install? Looking for one myself. Was trying to figure out where the trim pulls out without actually pulling anything out yet. lol
