Believe it. The VW TDI fanboyz get very unhappy when someone points out to them that the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes.

The thing is, the VW fanboyz do have one valid point--VWs are great cars to drive when they're running, and the build quality of the interior is the best in class (except for the current Jetta, which is disappointing). Before modifications, my TDI was superior to my Impreza in several ways, such as:
  • Infotainment--The TDI's stock head unit/sound system was superior to the Impreza's.
  • Body roll--The TDI in its stock configuration cornered flatter than the Impreza.
  • Interior noise--My TDI was super quiet while driving.
  • Seat comfort--The TDI's seats were slightly more comfortable than my Impreza's seats, and the TDI provided lumbar adjustment.
  • Switch gear--The TDI's switches were made of higher quality materials, and just felt better when using them. This was most noticeable on the HVAC control knobs.
  • Materials--The TDI had nicer materials on the headliner, visors, arm wrests, inside the cubbies and cup holders, etc. I suspect that the carpeting was of higher quality too. My TDI came with a leather steering wheel and shift knob, which my Sport Premium Impreza lacked.
  • Ambient lighting--The TDI's interior lighting at night was a very pleasant, dim glow that was just lovely.
  • Torque--The low-end torque of the TDI engine is very addicting. So is the MPGs.

I could go on, but you get the idea. The VW Golf TDI is a pretty upscale car, as evidenced by the above list. And it should be a nicer car--a base Impreza can be purchased for approximately $19k, while you can't get into a Golf TDI for less than $25k. That extra $6k should buy you extra goodies and quality.

All of the mods I've made to my Impreza were my way of making me not feeling sorry for myself due to the downgrade when going from the Golf TDI to the Impreza Sport Premium:
  • My Wheelskins leather steering wheel wrap, and my Subaru WRX leather shift knob keep me from having to hold plastic components while driving.
  • My Pioneer head unit is even nicer than the touch-screen HU that came in my TDI.
  • With the 19mm rear sway bar, my Impreza now corners more flatly than the TDI did.
  • The Cobb short shifter provides a nicer shifting experience than the TDI's stock shifter.

I could add Dynamat and ambient lighting to the Impreza, but those shortcomings don't bother me as much as the issues I've already improved with my mods. As for the switch gear and torque/MPGs, well, there's not much I can do about those things, but the Impreza is good enough in those regards, so I'm not worried about it.

I used to troll the TDI forum looking for newbie prospective TDI buyers who were looking for advice/reassurance. I would send them warning private messages, telling them what areas of weakness were built into the current TDI product line, and suggest that they do some research. Nine times out of ten, these newbies would end up buying the TDI anyway. Why? Because the car sells itself during the test drive. I got suckered into buying a TDI myself. Even after doing research, when you get behind the wheel of a TDI, you find a voice whispering into your ear saying, "This car is beautiful. How can a car this lovely be bad? You can't believe everything you read on the Internet, you know. Buy the TDI!"

I drank the Kool Aid just like most people who test drive a TDI, and it almost killed me. I now see that the Emperor is naked, fat, stupid, and ugly. And he has body odor. No matter how lovely a car is to drive, it's only lovely if it's drivable and not in the shop. My TDI spent 3 weeks out of the 27 months I owned it at the dealership.

The Impreza is less of a car than the Golf TDI, but I've improved my Impreza to my liking, I love the AWD when I need it, and I never worry about it starting and then getting me to my destination. And for a daily driver, that's priceless.

It's peace-of-mind that no "mod" can really deliver for ya. I've enjoyed making my Impreza my own, just as you have. No regrets choosing this car!

Right. The car's first job is to get you places. Miss a job interview, lose a client or get stranded and the leather, soundproofing and LCD screens won't do much to restore your trust.

Very true. But you won't get laid if the car breaks down as you're driving to pick up the girl, regardless of whether you have a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates right next to you on the passenger's seat.

In other news, sounds like I'm getting my wheels tomorrow. Trading my stock Sports with tires for a mint set of 17x7.5 +48 (I think) Rota Attacks (Gram Light 57c reps) with tires. If so, I'll pop a few pics up. I'm not a fan of running reps, but these will hold me over until I can get the ones I want.
