The wrap is made my 3M. I got free scraps from the local Autographics shop made them work. Just remember cut big with plenty of overlap and use heat to stretch the thing out. The shifter plate was the worst. Had to take a small piece and run it around the inside vertical wall and then overlay the big piece that I cut and pressed down. Pita but love it. Especially once a year when I dust the car out haha!

Who here has replaced the stereo in these cars?

I am considering swapping the radio for a Pioneer double-din, as well as doing speakers/tweeters, and adding a single powered sub.

For the speakers, I know they're 6.5's in each door, but what do you need to do the tweeters in the dash? Can I just get a set of the Alpine Type-S 6.5's for the rear, and get a pair of the Alpine Type-S component 6.5's for the front? Then just mount those tweeters up in the dash from the component set? Never really messed with component speakers before.. And for the sub, MTX offers a decent little powered 8" kit that tucks into the hatch nicely. Overall, it should be pretty decent.. Or, just get the OEM accessory Kicker stuff? I think I remember hearing the OEM Kicker stuff was only "ok" though.. I don't find the stock system "bad" necessarially, but the stock radio is most definitely under powered. And the radio reception is horrid. And yes, I did the "hidden menu". That helped a bit, but not a long-term fix IMO..

Don't forget a good set of cross-overs if you are not buying as a component set. Alpines are pretty good, I've ran them for years. I have type x spx-17pro's in one of my cars. They are pretty nice as a set with cross overs. I've also used type r mids with morel tweets and they compliment each other real well also if your buying separately. I was using the alpine H701 active crossover with it. If your replacing head unit, and using components I'm assuming you'll power the components with an amp?
If it were me, I'd stay with alpine.

Good tip!

Also, has anyone had any experience with towing in this car yet? I know most cars have some variation of towing capability, as does ours. I remember reading it in the manual when I first got the car.. Only reason I ask is because I may be moving to Texas from PA sooner than later and I was wondering about slapping a tow bar on it and a small trailer for a motorcycle? I've only ever used trucks to tow before.. Wasn't quite sure if this car would be ok with this task or not.. Specifically the cvt..

I dont know about the 13's, but the 12' Imprezas said specifically that towing would void the warranty.

I have towed in mine. Manual says towing not recommended but if you read the service manual it says replace transmission fluid at X miles if you tow. I got a 4x8 trailer from harbor freight tools and pulled the trailer loaded with a weeks worth of firewood, big a$$ cooler, 2 bicycles, grill and other things. Car did great. Even had 2 kayaks on top of car. Got the hitch from Uhaul and got the biggest rise in a hitch adapter I could find.

That's interesting. Manual tranny or CVT? Any idea how much that trailer weighed? Does that trailer have brakes (I'm guessing not)?

Cvt. no idea on weight. If I had to guess if say loaded the weight of everything was around 1200lbs. No brakes

OK, so I don't know much about towing. How does someone decide if a trailer needs to have its own brakes? If it weighs some percentage of what the pulling vehicle weighs? 50%? 75%?

I'm guessing there are rules that dictate how to make safe decisions about towing and the equipment that's being used when towing, but I don't know what those rules are. I'd hate to see this turn into a Darwin Award candidate.

Never used brakes on a trailer. When I was looking at getting a travel trailer to pull with my truck I asked those questions and basically was told a single axle trailer will not have brakes but a dual axel will. I had no problems stopping with pulling that load and even with kayaks on top. I think by the time out cars needed help braking they would be overloaded with weight so bad it wouldn't want to pull it. I had a 17ft bass boat and pulled it with an escape and it did great and that boat was HEAVY and had drums on back of escape. So don't worry with this car. You can't tow enough to need brakes.

Fwiw- XV's also have 4.44 gears and bigger brakes as well as the Forester my2007 radiator.
IIRC the manuals are rated to tow more than the cvt.

The laws vary by state, but it looks like you're correct:

http://drivinglaws.aaa.com/laws/trailer-brakes/

On another site, it says that the tongue weigt of the trailer should be at least 10% of the trailer's total weight. So how the trailer gets loaded/balanced is important too (that is, don't put most of the weight in the rear of the trailer).

Well, working on the Impreza has been fun, but the more I want to do to it... the more I realize spending money to replace brand-new parts with other brand-new parts is kind of not cost-effective. I may do more to it later, but for now it'll remain my daily driver. Everything that's been done to it is about what I'd like before it starts getting ridiculously expensive (Manual Transmission Swap, Turbo engine swap, all expensive ideas).

In the meantime, I've picked up a project car to keep me from doing stupid things to my '12 Impreza. It's a 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS Coupe with 153k on it. She's in rough shape, but I think I saved her just in time. Transmission and Engine are great. Struts are toast, body needs work, and it just needs TLC all around in general. I'll have more info on it (and all my Subaru-ness) posted up on my blog All We'll Drive.

Until my next crazy idea, here's how my Impreza is sitting now! Just had another great cruise with some friends last weekend.

Here's the build thread for NASIOC on the new project car: RS Revival

Does anyone have any idea on tracking down a "parts store" cabin air filter replacement? IE, a Fram, Purolator, etc. I've tried looking for our cars, the XV, but nothing is really coming up. Don't know if it can be cross-referenced with a Legacy or anything similar..

I like the ATP carbon one better than the Wix. from what I found only Wix is available at the parts stores

Changed my stock tires last weekend. They were at 45k.

Replaced with the same OEM tires I bought off a guy on here. Wow... so much quieter when theyre new. Its so quiet I can hear my mudflaps on the highway.
