For the base model, it looks pretty dam good. It kinda makes the Impreza line look "grown up" in a way.

This is the best idea. Just what I would have recommended. Not only are you losing nothing but you're saving a few lease payments and a few month of cheaper insurance.

This is what I want to do. Get a beater with a heater.

If I REALLY wanted a new car, but had to wait, I'd just take this option for a couple of months. You can always sell it or just keep it as back up (if no room to park them all then just sell it).

Don't get too excited. Subaru has stated that the WRX/STi will remain essentially unchanged "for a while." That probably means at least two years, so they won't get a redesign until 2014, which would be on track with the Forrester updates.

Another tidbit I've seen says that they won't be based on the impreza any more, and that this current difference is just the segue into that. Havnt seen anything saying what the future cars will be based on though. Might become a whole separate line based on the Toybaru chassis or something.

If Subaru shares the development cost with Toyota then it would make more sense to have separate STI/WRX and Impreza architectures.

I remember reading somewhere that the new 2012 Impreza 5spd would have a viscous-coupling locking center differential (50/50 split) and the CVT would use an Active Torque Split AWD. So with the CVT you get the better mpg but lose out on the viscous diff and get the electromagnetic diff instead? If the CVT is a $1000 option, the manual seems the way to go right? The extra 3mpg over the course of a year/15,000miles comes out to what, like $150-160 in savings.

The 3 MPG difference is over the EPA cycle. In the real world you could probably match or exceed the EPA numbers for the CVT just by driving like a grandma. Manual is always the way to go

Yeah that is what I was thinking as well in regards to the manual, especially if the CVT is an added option. I personally would prefer the viscous diff so if that only comes on the manual that makes it easier to decide. I don't know much about the CVT design for the Impreza, but is the electromagnetic diff inherently needed due to the design? Why not use a viscous diff with the CVT as well?

Looks permanent to me. Most likely the lower ends cars have the simple but realtime gauge to make you sad when you floor it.

a couple subaru's already have that gauge, for example the legacy gt's/3.0r's. they also have the digital readout too in the center.

also, that might be a US-spec car at a car show.

I think I would prefer an analog fuel gauge and then a digital mpg. But that is just me.

It isn't a matter of whether or not a previous outback or legacy had it in the past. It is the fact that they have included it on the new 2012 Impreza when it wasn't there on the 2011. To me, my opinion, it looks outdated and tachy.

eventhough I agree with manuals, In the cheapo car market its
pretty hard to sell the manuals once you wanna get rid of them in this country. It reduces your potential buyers tremendously.
