Default Custom white on black license plates in Utah?

Twice now I've seen late-model cars (one RS4, one Cadillac Escalade) with antique-style white-on-black license plates here in Utah:

(1968 Utah License Plate)

Every car I've owned has been black, and I just added another black car to the mix. I'd really like to have one of these white-on-black license plates, but the DMV only allows antique license plates of the same year as your car to be used:

A quick conversation with the local DMV guy confirmed this, although he wouldn't comment on the other cars I've seen with this style of license plate and admitted he may be missing a loophole somewhere.

Unless I find this loophole, I figure these are my options:
1. Give up and put another brightly-colored license plate on my car.
2. Purchase some antique license plates in good shape, purchase vanity plates with the same digits of my antique plates, and then swap the antique plates on to my car. Registration would match and I'm technically using official Utah license plates. I could carry the new vanity plates in my trunk in case a DMV-savvy officer catches on.

These are for my weekend/AutoX car rather than my daily driver, so I'm willing to take a little more risk here. Does anyone have any input, or perhaps know of the obscure loopholes that others might have used?

I have been trying to find an answer to this question since I saw that GTR with the black plates. If you find out let me know.

The guy with the audi said he had a 69 camaro and transferred them over when he got the rs4.

there is only 2 ways to do it

1 get old 68-72 car and register it then transfer the plate to new car

2. get new custom plates with the same #'s as the old plate and risk getting in trouble.

I ended up keeping the getto ski utah one.

I've tried to catch the guy in the yellow RS4 in Lindon probably 5 different times now to no avail. Thanks for the information.

Anyone have a 1969 vehicle they'd like to sell to me for $1 for a few days?

You have to have had the license plate when it was issued. You continue to carry over the plate onto the new vehicle. If you didnt have it back then, your chit out of luck.

Its a damn license plate. Get over it.

I met a dude that painted his ski utah blue letters black. It actually looked good and he also painted the red area above the letters black as well and so far he has had zero comlaints or a hassle from the po-po.

I heard you can paint your license plate as long as it is reflective and still says utah on it. It could have been hearsay though.

I have vintage plates for my vespa. When I asked the DMV they said I could use them as long as they were from the same year, and never registered. But that's for a vintage vehicle.

Lets just say I know someone who tried to do it the way Mikey did it on the GTR and it seems as if the DMV has caught on quick. They wouldnt buy his story at all and told him to get bent.

When some one says get bent, they are meaning to bend over and take it in the ass, but in the DMVs case I think they're meaning it figuratively. Essentialy they were telling him no.
