How is there not a neutral? (Every vehicle should have a neutral, not just some.)
I understand why there is no transmission. but no way to disengage the drivetrain at all, without taking the car to pieces? Seems like a big oversight. Last edited by HipToBeSquare; 02-10-2011 at 10:49 AM. |

It's not rocket science: Don't tow FWD vehicles while in gear with their front wheels on the ground. Either disengage the transmission (Hip: neutral was mentioned) or tow with the non-driven wheels on the ground.

EV's don't need clutch so it could be impossible to disengage the transmission.

Isn't this the same issue with AWD vehicles -- that they can't be towed with two wheels on the ground and that really a flatbed should be used? The problem is that if a tow truck driver is towing your car from an illegally parked space, they probably couldn't give two ****s if it messes up your car.

True, but it may not always be readily apparent that damage was done, especially to the average driver. So, it may not immediately damage the car, but could shorten the life of certain drivetrain parts.

pretty simple..
a sticker prominently placed on the vehicle that says... "by moving this vehicle, you accept liability for all damage done to vehicle caused by moving or storing the vehicle in a manner not approved by the owner of the vehicle." |

First I’ve heard of this. Always thought they had some kind of neutral. Sounds like some kid of rudimentary clutch system could provide a way of providing a “neutral” should it be parked with the e-brake on.
A “do not tow” sticker in a major city when illegally parked. Good luck with that. ![]() |

Why not just have it charging when it's being towed? Silly tow truck drivers, charging my car when they're towing it.

Good luck with that. You accepted some amount of liability when you parked illegally. At best you can make an argument that the car should be towed per the manufacturer's recommendations.

You can't prepare for every situation. I have been towed a few times in the city. Very few of them were my fault. Problem is they still towed me, never in the Subbie thank God. Street parking is always a hazard in the city. They don't tow out of garages, buck-up and park in a garage.

I think most tow trucks are equipted with dolly wheels that sit under the dragging wheels of the towed vehicle. This is how a normal tow truck an tow AWD cars or pickup trucks.
This topic is a really much to do about nothing. |

But not all tow companies use the drag wheels or flatbeds. Especially ones that work in the cities that allow for "private" tow-away zones.

Why should it have a neutral? What would be the point? The only advantage would be in situations like this, but there are plenty of cars that have the same problem already (IE, AWD) and nobody is complaining. Neutral would be a completely pointless and expensive addition. |

guess it never snows where you live... when a car is covered in snow, even 0.1" of snow, you cant see stickers thru the windshield so the tow truck is not liable.
