Cool 07 Outback 2.5i -> 2.5GT or STI?

2007 Outback 2.5i 5-Speed, 115k, got a bad rod or spun bearing. Every thread I find tells me "too much money, buy a Legacy GT". Regardless... I need a new engine and $2k for another stock 2.5i sounds so lame. Could I stretch my budget to $5k and make this work? Ok, so I know I'll need EM, exhaust, etc... but it should mount right up, correct? I've heard I need a new subframe upfront... I'm sure someone's done this, what's the skinny?

Default tranny?

I think the elephant in the room you're forgetting is the tranny. Your stock tranny cannot handle more than stock power for long, without breaking gears, synchros, etc.

WRX or LGT Tranny? $1-2k depending on condition

I think your best bet is buying a wrecked WRX and swapping everything that will fit. That takes care of 90% of the parts for your swap without having to source random parts from all over. Like I did.

I get the feeling though, that you're looking for a way to get a WRX cheaper than you would if you just bought one. Not gonna happen IMO. Swaps are great, and having something unique is totally worth the pain and hassle. But you could buy a used 2.0 wrx for $7-8k at this point.

Just my 2 cents...
