Default Roof racks for 97 Legacy GT Wagon

I'm looking for roof racks for my 97 GT Wagon. I'm not sure what's best; so I'm hoping people could show off their setups and help me find what fits my needs. I only have the factory side rails with no cross bars, and I want to carry surfboards (I'm all about loggin' on the longboards here in SoCal).

Thanks!

Not sure about the earlier roof racks, but our 2002 Outback has very substantial rails in which we mounted the Yakima clamp thingies(called Cross rails or something like that) Found them on ebay for like $40 and then bought the cross bars locally at a bike shop to save shipping costs. We haul canoes and kayaks on our OBW with no problems, so long boards oughta be a snap. I think Yakima has a special add on for sur boards that clamps to the bar and likely pricey too!! IGot the 58" bars. Go to www.yakima.com for a complete tutorial on what's available for your vehicle and their suggestions.

I would caution you in using the older 3rd generation aircraft carrier Tower mounts that clamp on to the edge under the roofline. I had a set of those that came with our 1996 Legacy Brighton wagon and I was carrying a 15' canoe and a strong crosswind blew the whole mess off the roof and I was glad I tied the bow and stern to the bumpers or someone could've been seriously injured behind me. In the future, I'll mount a set of Yakima rain gutters and drill through the roof and use their old school 1A towers so I can have a little more piece of mind.

YMMV
