Default Report: More rumors on the return of BMWís Z lineup

Some reports shows up recently suggesting BMW is working on the return of some Z models, mainly to replace the aging current Z4 and to expand the lineup.
According to BMWBlog and Motor.es, rumors of a new entry-level Z1 continue to be reaffirmed to be alive and well as an additional model to sit below the current Z4. Much like rumors in the past, fingers point to the use of BMWís latest UKL platform, which also underpins Miniís entire new lineup and the next-gen BMW 1-Series. And yes, that means the Z1 is likely to be front-wheel driven, so expect it to be an Audi TT competitor most likely.
In addition to the Z1, a successor to the Z4, a new Z3, is supposedly on the drawing board to become a close competitor with the Porsche Boxster and Cayman. Both the Z1 and Z3 are expected to get a selection of TwinPower Turbo three-, four- and six-cylinder inline engines.

But wait, thereís more. A range-topping Z5 may be the cherry on top of the icing on the cake as a large two-door. No word as to whether or not itíll be a coupe, convertible, or an offering of both, but said Z5 is rumored to have a carbon fiber monocoque, one probably sourced from the new i8, a modern design with a long, classic sloping hood, and four proper seats. The only M version mentioned in this rumor is one for the Z5, and it may be a hybrid.

Why would these not be the Z2, Z4, and Z6 to stay in line with BMW's current even numbered coupe designations?

I think all BMW Z models would be coupes.

That's the point. BMW's naming conventions are now "even numbers are coupes, odds are 4 doors". Ergo, there should be no odd numbered Z.

Well, their system is all messed up, and full of "buts"...so I wouldn't count on anything...

For example, 428 GC:

Right, after the 4GC and 6GC, anything goes.

Default Mysterious BMW prototype rumored to be a front-wheel drive Z2

Quote:
Yesterday's mysterious BMW prototype continues to spawn debate but a new report is indicating the model is a mule for a new Z2 roadster.
According to Auto Motor und Sport, the Z2 will be launched in 2016 and be about 15 centimeters shorter than the 2-Series Coupe. It is rumored to be powered by the 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine - that develops 231 PS (170 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque - from the MINI Cooper JCW.
Interestingly, the magazine says the Z2 will ride on the front-wheel drive UKL platform that underpins the MINI Cooper and 2-Series Active Tourer. The publication goes onto say the platform switch is why the rear end of the mule has been significantly altered.

That kinda irks me... they have/had a meaningful convention for naming, but they seem to be trying harder and harder to make it meaningless like all the other dumb letter/number combos out there.

Z8 with V12 pls. Not that the Fisker Z8 was bad, but I'm more interested in something like the V12 shoehorned into the Z3: http://www.topgear.com/uk/photos/bmw-z3-v12-2012-08-08

But those vehicles are still meant to evoke the styling of coupe. Are the z1,3,5 meant to evoke the styling of sedans?

I am guessing that they are just keeping the recognizable Z3 name intact.

They haven't made a Z3 since 2002, and it was only the 1 generation.

They've made 2 generations of Z4s.

I bet they would come up with a Z-sedan (or 4 door coupe) line up and Z based crossover before we know it

Default BMW Axes Z2 Project

BMW scraps Z2 plan for bijou MX-5 rival

► BMW Z2 roadster project axed
► Front-wheel drive MX-5 rival dead
► Originally planned for 2016, £20k

Itís all change at the top for BMW - and the new management has pulled the plug on the proposed BMW Z2 sports car, a small rival for the best-selling MX-5.

AdTech Ad
CAR magazine first revealed the plan in the February 2011 issue, but now we hear that the new leadership under chairman Harald KrŁger and R&D chief Klaus FrŲhlich has axed the programme as being inessential. Blame sluggish sports car sales and the unstoppable global trend towards SUVs.

They are putting each and every future project under scrutiny and the baby roadster, depicted in CARís artistís impressions from the archive, is no longer an active project.

BMW Z2: the roadster that could have been

This was to have been a small, open-top sports car to slot beneath the well established Z4 coupe-convertible.

It was a back-to-basics BMW: two seats only, a simple engine choice of three- and four-cylinder engines and - BM traditionalists look away now - front-wheel drive.

Thatís because the project was part of the new front-drive transverse architecture; the Z2 was to be part of the Mini/1-series/2-series clan, in other words. Which makes us wonder if the still-active Mini Superleggera - essentially a front-wheel drive MX-5 rival - has squeezed the Z2 out. Munich fears there isnít enough space for both.
