Default Quick Newb Question... 06 STI exhaust on 02 WRX

Hi all... I've been researching stuff on here since December when I first bought my Bugeye Impreza. I've done a bunch of searches and I can't find a definitive answer on my question so I can pull the trigger on buying a part.

I can get a 2006 STI catback exhaust on Craigslist. Will it just bolt-on to my 2002 WRX?

The guy wants $180, which I think is way high. What would y'all pay for something like this? He mentioned the Cat is cracked, so I know I should just mount it axle-back?

IIRC, the only diff is the exhaust tip. I would pay maybe $50 for it.

It's just the tip?

My existing one is the factory "upgrade" I think. It doesn't lQQk like 2 regular peashooters, they each have a chrome collar on them.

I'm on the profile Kentrik.

Well, the old ones have the twin peashooter tip, and the new ones have the single tip. I know that the newer ones there is no difference between the WRX and STi exhaust, except that some of the STi's have the STi logo stamped on the tip. If you're ok with paying for just that, that's cool I guess.

Or....for around $120-$150 shipped, you can get an ebay catback that actually opens up the exhaust a bit and makes it sound much better. For that price, you can get it in the typical N1 fartcan style, one akin to the Greddy Evo 2 style, or the Cobb catback style.

This one has the STI logo embossed on it.

I just don't want it to get crazy loud. Many of the posts that I read say that the stock STI muffler is the perfect blend of badness/quiet.

Fair enough. It will be restrictive, though, flow-wise. I would recommend that you go with a Cobb-style one if you're gonna pay that much. It's not really loud unless you're seriously getting on it. But again, that is my opinion. I just don't think I could justify that much for the part just because it has the STi logo.

Like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/3-TUR...item255fb0a4fd

But again, if it's just the looks you're going for, that's up to you.

Thanks for the link. The STI should just bolt-on axleback huh?

I'm gonna offer the guy $75 and see if he bites.

Yup. The one I had running for a while bolted up. Axle-back wise, only difference was the number of tips.

No difference in the sound? If there's not, then I won't pull the trigger.

A slight difference. Not very noticeable. That's why I recommended the Cobb knockoff.

Listen around to a few different exhausts before you pull the trigger. Go on rides with local people at low and high speeds to see if what you're looking into has a good noise and a tolerable amount of drone, and whatnot. If it's worth buying, it's worth taking the time and research to buy.

Thanks for the advice. The problem for me is that I've ONLY seen maybe 2 other WRXs in my area.

Haha. Lurk the crap out of the TXIC and see if there's anyone on there who will help you out. The advantage of having regional chapters is exactly that reason - it's nice to have brothers around. Granted, Texas is a big place, and fairly spread out. I'm almost positive if you're in the deep south part the ratio of bro truck drivers to subie drivers is like 11tybillion:1, but I would think there's got to be SOMEBODY within a half hour drive who would be willing to do some cruisin with ya.

I got the guy to bite. $60, and I got it on there in 20 minutes. I seem to hear the turbo whining a whole lot more now. Maybe the old exhaust was clogged or something???

I'm happy w/ the pseudo-upgrade, and the single tip lQQks way nicer to me. Thanks for all of the advice..

It's possible. Glad it was only $60. I don't think it would have been worth more. And the single tip definitely looks better than the dual pea-shooter.

Now on to the next order of business...

I had zero leaks when I first put the car on the lift a month back. Now it's leaking from the oil filter [Fram], the oil change was done by the dealer that sold it to me.

I'm going to use the OEM Subaru filter when I change the oil this weekend. I searched and read that the leak may stem from a faulty oil pressure switch, is this common?

Oil pressure switch is dry! I decided to change the oil since I see that hella peeps here are anti FRAM.

The gasket separated from the filter, I guess that's why it was leaking. I did an oil change w/ the OEM [Blue] filter from Subaru + Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. Hopefully that will take care of the problem.
